The USA is only sending 6 male boxers. That's not good. That's the lowest amount of boxers the USA has qualified in years.
N'Dam won this fight clearly. I always thought Esquivel was one of the weaker links of the USA team. N'Dam didn't look too good, but it was enough to beat Esquivel.
N'Dam has no chance of medaling if he qualifies IMO.Comment

and their highest weight class is MW. I can't remember the last time team USA didn't have a LHW, HW or SHW.The USA is only sending 6 male boxers. That's not good. That's the lowest amount of boxers the USA has qualified in years.

sounds like a close fight, which shows that being a seasoned pro is not necessarily an insurmountable advantage in this format
at LHW i'm only really familiar with la cruz, ward, buatsi and the kazakh who robbed gvozdyk in 2012, and i wouldn't necessarily favour n'dam over any of them. certainly not the first twoComment

I know in 2008 the USA didn't qualify a LHW and SHW, but they qualified someone in the remaining weight classes including HW (Deontay Wilder).
I don't know if there ever was a time when the USA didn't qualify at least one boxer in one of these weights LHW, HW or SHW at an Olympic games. If it did happen then it must have happened before 1992. Hopefully that made sense.
Welterweight is usually one of the USA's best weight classes. In 2008 there was Demetrius Andrade (who was one of the better boxers of that team along with Warren and Russell) and in 2012 there was Spence (who was probably the best boxer of that team). The USA failed to qualify someone in that weight class as well this year.Comment
