Comments Thread For: Jamel Herring - War Veteran Appreciative Of ESPN Opportunity

By Keith Idec - Jamel Herring couldn't turn down this opportunity. The 2012 American Olympian has wanted to test himself against a legitimate lightweight contender for quite some time. Fighting Russian Denis Shafikov in an ESPN main event on Independence Day weekend also means more to Herring than it would to most boxers...

Haven't seen Herring before but noticed he's the betting favourite, interested to see how he looks against a legit opponent as I don't recognise the names on his record.

2 tours of Iraq, a best friend and a child dying, I guess if he wins at least we don't have to be worried about him turning into a bitch and wanting even the slightest challenge to wait 18 months and marinate.

Good luck to Herring but Shafikov is a very tough out. I wasn't alone in considering that he deserved at least a draw against Rances and while Titere had his number Vasquez is a puzzle not many could solve (Bey certainly didn't).

If Jamel can make it through Shafikov he belongs near the top at 135, but I think it's a big ask.
