Golovkin had a great amateur career and was an Olympic silver medalist. Matthysse was not.

Golovkin is undefeated. Matthysse lost to Judah and Alexander. (I thought Judah won and Alexander lost but regardless of how you felt of those decisions, Golovkin has shown that he obliterates that caliber of opposition and doesn't allow it to go to the cards.)

Golovkin has destroyed several top 10 contenders. Matthysse beat 1: Peterson.

Golovkin has a well rounded fighter with a great jab, counter punching skills and a wide variety of punches in his arsenal. Matthysse is more of a mid-range boxer that can counter.

Golovkin can cut off the ring. Matthysse struggles with boxers/movement.

Golovkin's only glaring vulnerabilities are his inside game and being ineffective going backwards. Matthysse showed a lot more vulnerabilities heading into the fight with Garcia.


To sum it up, Golovkin is a special fighter on the verge of greatness. Matthysse is a top level contender who could never take that next step.
