The jury didn't say that. Golden Boy's promoter said that. IF All--Star didn't have a contract with Alvarez, the jury would not have awarded All-Star a dime. They awarded them $8.5 million because Alvarez broke the contract and profited from the breaking of the contract.

Shocked that is was only 8.5. Canelo/Oscar got off easy. Now it's back to business for Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo. Let's get some cards scheduled and fights made. Don't appeal just pay the money and move on. This was just a blimp on the radar.

what a bizarre ruling. If they are letting GBP off the hook because "there was no contract", then why does Canelo owe $8.5 million for breaching a contract that supposedly doesnt exist? And if the found Canelo did in fact breach a contract and had to pay $8.5 million, then how is it that Golden Boy didnt "interfere" with said contract? The 2 rulings seem to be in conflict with each other........

This is exactly what I was thinking initially, but the jury award was for what they considered All-Star's enriching Canelo's career. Which is true to a certain extent, although I think it should be zero after All-Star tried to fool Canelo.

All-Star's lawyer: "Maybe there was not a dead-on contract between them, but there was clearly a relationship that existed between Canelo and Zabala and the jury felt it necessary to compensate Zabala for what he did for launching Canelo's career in the United States," Alex Brito, Zabala's attorney, told ESPN.com. "The jury made a determination of what the value was for what Tutico did for Canelo when he was starting off as a professional in the United States."

This may have been the way the jury saw it, but IMO it's still b.s. The jury should have nullified (if they could) Zapata's lawsuit because of him intentionally trying to trick Canelo with the contract extension written in English, and Zapata likely told Canelo it was just a visa application. Canelo's only mistake IMO was not getting an outside lawyer to look over the contract before signing it.

One thing wrong in the article. It says the Hatton fight was a 6th round KO win, when actually Canelo won by UD over 12.
