It doesn't matter how skilful you are, if you can't take a punch you won't have a long succesful career in pro boxing. Look at Amir Khan. A lot of people were praising Ismayl Sillakh unitl it turned out he's hiding that glass. Chad Dawson was good enough to be a champ in previous era, but this era of light heavyweights has tons of devastating punchers like Kovalev, Gvozdyk, Beterbiev, damn even Barrera who lost to Ward. Right now light heavyweight division is way too stacked for boxers like Chad. Dawson need to forget about boxing and be glad that he even was a champion for some time

Chad can take a punch, he took some really hard shots from Pascal, I mean A LOT of hard shots for 12 rounds. He beat Hopkins with two cuts in his eyes.
The problem with Chad has always been mental, he never really had confidence in himself and he was always replacing trainers which further deteriorated his skills. He went into the Stevenson fight looking like he was questioning himself. When a boxer is questioning himself in the ring, that's a sign of of a boxer who is not confident. Had Chad just stuck with a permanent trainer before he won the title he would still be champion right now.

I would have really liked to have seen Ward and Alvarez I personally think that would have been perfect. Then he could have fought Kovalev in the fall and then had a mandatory shot at Stevenson early 2017
