I don't think any reasonable person would suggest that Alvarez doesn't deserve the lion's share of the money to be made from this fight but at what point does this become nothing more than an attempt to price himself out of the fight?

Obviously, Alvarez's team would have liked to avoid a purse bid but it's not like Golovkin sneaked in as his mandatory when they weren't looking. They knew before the Cotto fight what the deal was. They've had plenty of time to come to an agreement. That they didn't manage to do does not reflect well on them. I can understand not wanting to concede anything to Golovkin but to sacrifice a good deal of Alvarez's reputation to either to put Golovkin at a disadvantage with catchweight demands or merely to maintain a sense of control? Not a good look regardless of how stubborn Golovkin's team may have been.

      .
Because they aren't dumb. When you're mandatory to a big star like Canelo, or Floyd or Pacquiao or whatever big star you know you aren't getting 54/45, purse bid rules or not. You could use those rules as leverage perhaps to squeeze out a slightly better deal while negotiating, but any promoter going in knows they aren't getting anything close to 50/50. Money has never been an issue here. K2/GGG have never suggested that they deserve 45% or anything else, it's always been known Canelo would get the lionshare of the money. They just want Golovkin in a big fight, that's all they care about. The problem of course ia Canelo dropped the belt rather than negotiate at all, since they don't want the fight next. Whatever excuse they come up with for Canelo dropping the belt is just that, an excuse, which doesn't change the reality of what they did.

This lawsuit.. it's been going on for three years now. In these three years has it ever come up as a reason why a fight not get made? Has it been an issue?

It would make sense for Golden Boy to ask K2 for a reprieve while they try and get this sorted. Did they do so?

Loeffler did say Golden Boy didn't ask for any outrageous financial splits. So I'm pretty sure they were ok with 70-30 because that isn't an outrageous split

There weren't any outrageous demands made at any point during negotiations. They didn't ask for any extensions to the deadline, for any ridiculous weight demands or unfair financial terms.
By Jake Donovan - It was never the manner in which he wanted to add another title belt to his collection, but all that Gennady Golovkin and Tom Loeffler can do

Golden Boy doesn't want him to get his ass kicked. There's no need to think this any further than that.

I hoped Alvarez would speak up and influence this fight happening anyway, but apparently not.

... Yes: "legal issues" or no "legal issues", GBP doesn't want to ruin Canelo's career.

LOL if anyone is buying a lawsuit thats been going on for 5 years is the reason Canelo ins't fighting GGG. And I'll happily eat crow if this fight gets made in September after this case is resolved in early to mid-June as suggested, but best case I see them saying..."well since we couldn't get a deal in May & now its like 3-4 weeks after that we gotta fight Lemeiux or Liam Smith or BJS in September & maybe we'll fight GGG in May 2017 or Sept. 2017".

Randomly, I'm secretly rooting for BJS to get the Canelo callup cuz I think he beats Canelo & f#cks **** up.

I could understand if Golden Boy were worried that now there's a trial Alvarez's training might be interrupted by the need to testify in court. Of course if a fight is made for Alvarez too soon after the trial is concluded we'll know the truth.

I'm a bit on the fence on whether or not Canelo is brave enough to fight GGG, he may well be. However, I know for a fact that his promotional team are not keen on a fully fledged, legitimate power house beating on a 5'7'' wannabe middleweight.

Size matters. Weight divisions exist for a reason. Power always reveals the truth.
