Comments Thread For: Roach Backs Canelo: Golovkin The Best, But Brings NO Money!

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is backing Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's decision to vacate the WBC middleweight championship. The World Boxing Council had ordered Canelo (47-1-1, 33KOs) to make a mandatory defense against IBO/WBA/IBF/WBC middleweight world champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).

In other words, Roach believes that Golovkin doesn't make financial sense.

I hate this argument. If you're arguing about why Canelo took Khan rather than GGG it's valid, but now who else is bigger business for Canelo than GGG? Liam Smith certainly isn't

This mentality ruined the sport. This is a dam good fight and it doesnt make sense to pass up. Now is tje time to make it while its a hot commod, any longer spoils it and it doesnt do as big on #s.

If i was Canelo i would make everybody, even GGG, believe i was "scared" before immediately agreeing to terms or that shock value. Leave everybody shook like floyd had canelo shook.

If Canelo loses it'll damage future earnings.

If Mayweather-Pacquiao fought straight away whoever lost wouldn't have been selling 1 mil PPVs against Mosley. They made more money dragging it out than they would have fighting straight away.

And no names like Josesito Lopez, Matthew Hatton, and about 30 other fighters on Canelo's record made financial sense?

The biggest fight of the MW division doesn't make financial sense? What bullshit is this?

This kind of 'business decision' from a young, prime fighter's team is absolutely disgusting. He gave up the most prestigious MW title to sidestep his mandatory after telling the world he would fight him. I'm sure Canelo's not scared, but his advisers are making him look like a joke.

It was a good enough argument for Golovkin to use on Ward/Lara.
