I think it's no coincidence, if Maskaev beats Rock.....all four major title holders will be Slavs.
You can't deny the fact they are dominant.
You could point to the heavyweight division and write it off...because of the lack of a "true champion" but that doesn't change facts. Plus I think Wladimir Klitschko stands head and shoulders above everyone else because he's torn house on solid competition here in the States.
Regardless....if you were to look at all the major achievements among fighters in the division, you'd notice how many Slavs are right there among the top, mediocre, and weak opposition.
They're everywhere, and they're just like Mexicans under 140. You could stand in the rankings and shoot a pellet and you'd hit ten Slavs in the HW division.

Originally posted by HousActually the Germanic people are the largest ethnic group on the plantet, bigger than the slavs in height. Denmark is the tallest nation on earth. The strongest man on earth isnt slavic, its a farmer from the midwest, probably Irish / English. and the strongest man in the strongest man competetion is Magnus Samuelesson of Sweeden, i think Sweds are concidered Germanic aswell.
Its mostly due to culture.
Also there are less gyms around white suburban areas. Klitschko isn't Russian but he is slavik.Comment

Differentiation and Genetic Position of Slavs among Eurasian Ethnic Groups as Inferred from Variation in Mitochondrial DNA
The distribution of identical and similar (phylogenetically related) types of hypervariable segment1 (HVS1) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was studied in human populations belonging to three Slavonic groups and nine ethnogeographic groups of Eurasia (total sample size 2772 people). The results testified to a common origin of West, South, and East Slavs and revealed a central place of West Slavs among all Slavonic ethnic groups. Mixing was shown to play a substantial role in the formation of specific features of all three Slavonic gene pools. The mitochondrial gene pools of the Slavonic ethnic groups proved to preserve features suggesting a common ancestor for these and South European populations (especially those of the Balkan Peninsula).Comment

I remember when we were all one, Russia took all the credit for anything good that came out. Different language, different culture, two different countries. It's much better this way, now our atheletes have a chance to shine.
PS Ethnically a lot of Russia isn't pure Slavs its mixed with a lot of Norweign and northern tribes.Comment

Russia looks to its fathers
In the latest in our series about the role of the state in encouraging couples to have more children, Patrick Jackson in Moscow looks at how a rising birth rate is bringing cheer to Russia but mortality rates among adult males remain dangerously high.
From 8.7 births per 1,000 people in 2000, it has gone to 10.4 in 2004, state statistics show.
Basicly the birth rate in Russia is now going up, due to encouragement to have more babies.Comment

Good.
Same article says mortality rate in Russian males is 59 years due to hard labor, Compared to 74 for women.

Mitochondrial DNA variability in Russians and Ukrainians: implication to the origin of the Eastern Slavs.
Malyarchuk BA, Derenko MV.
Institute of Biological Problems of the North, Magadan, Russia. ibpn@online.magadan.su
In order to investigate the origin of the Eastern Slavs, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation was examined in Russians and Ukrainians by hypervariable segment I (HVS I) sequencing and restriction analysis of the haplogroup-specific sites. No significant differences were found for Russians and Ukrainians when compared to other Europeans - in fact, they fall within the range of gene diversity seen throughout Europe and exhibit the unimodal pattern of pairwise sequence differences. Moreover, HVS I sequences in the Russians and Ukrainians are similar or identical to those found in eastern and western European populations. Despite the small genetic distances between Europeans, phylogenetic analysis reveals a considerable heterogeneity of Eastern Slavonic populations - they do not cluster together onto a phylogenetic tree. Analysis of distribution of rare HVS I types shared between populations of Eastern Slavs and other West Eurasians has shown that Russians share rare haplotypes mainly with Germans and Finno-Ugric populations. Of these, subhaplogroup H1 sequence types, which are defined by different combinations of nucleotides 16192T, 16294T, 16304C, 16311C and 16320T, are found predominantly in common between Russians and German-speaking populations. The data obtained allow us to conclude that the Slavonic migrations in early Middle Ages from their putative homeland in central Europe to the east of Europe were accompanied mostly by the same mtDNA types characteristic for the pre-Slavonic populations of eastern Europe.Comment
