Fighters from former Soviet block countries seem to be taking over the heavyweight division. Newly crowned WBO champion Liakhovich, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, by way of Belarus, joins WBA titlist Nicolay Valuev of Russia as the second Russian-speaking world heavyweight champion. There could soon be more to follow. Wladimir Klitschko of the Ukraine is expected to become the third current Russian-speaking heavyweight king when he faces Chris Byrd on April 22, and Oleg Maskaev of Uzbekistan hopes to make it a clean sweep when he tries to repeat a previous win over WBC champion Hasim Rahman later this year. Waiting in the wings are unbeaten contenders Sultan Ibragimov of Russia, his cousin Timur Ibragimov of Uzbekistan (who faces Calvin Brock on June 24) and "The White Tyson" Ruslan Chagaev also of Uzbekistan. Expected to join the mix in a year or two is 2004 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Alexander Povetkin of Russia, who is 6-0 with 5 KOs as a pro.

Fact is, you better get used to seeing lots more Europeans in the heavyweight division, cause the d*** RUSSIANS ARE COMING!!! Seriously, there is at least 4-5 big, well gifted Russian Heavys hitting the scene as of late. All following in the footsteps of one, Wladimir Klitschko. I know, you laugh but I see him as one of the better contenders for unifying the division as long as he hasn't gotten rattled, er his chin that is. Same thing happened to Lewis and he was able to bounce back nicely before calling it quits. I believe that Klitschko is the much more talented brother and has what it would take to be a good champion. Besides him, you got Sultan Ibragimov, Oleg Maskaev, the giant Nickolai Valuev and Sergei Liakhovich all vying for their spot atop the rattled division.

Great post, and keep in mind. This is straight off the IGN forums and credit given.....before the Wlad v.s. Byrd fight.
Klitschko's are anything but Russian. Ukrainians are producing well built atheletes all these others are a lot of imitations. We have Dimitrenko, *****ko, and a couple of others on the rise. Lyakovich and Valuev are not on the elite level.

Now that Soviet union has been dead for 15 years you see the guys come out from the confinement of the iron curtain.
Actually the Germanic people are the largest ethnic group on the plantet, bigger than the slavs in height. Denmark is the tallest nation on earth. The strongest man on earth isnt slavic, its a farmer from the midwest, probably Irish / English. and the strongest man in the strongest man competetion is Magnus Samuelesson of Sweeden, i think Sweds are concidered Germanic aswell.

      Its mostly due to culture.

Also there are less gyms around white suburban areas. Klitschko isn't Russian but he is slavik.

Well there is a lot of German and Scandinavian mix in Western Ukraine , Being the largest European country Ukraine has quite a mix of people (no Canada lol but generaly speaking). Far west is usualy bigger then the rest, while more south east its smaller I myself am 6'1 and damn I was far from big around my friends.

I dont see a lot of Irish/English people in strong man competition, anytime the stuff is on the TV Magnus Samuelsson won the strong man in 98, since then its been Mariusz Pudzianowski 3 times and in 2004 Vasyl Virastyuk.

Scandinavians definetly take the cake for being the tallest but they are usualy tall and lean, Slavs are a bit shorter but widder and thicker

Well its indeed all about culture.

Well the Irish man i was talking about shattered the world record on bench press by benching 1050lbs, not strongman competition. It is a fact that the Dutch are the tallest people on earth, no need to argue with that.

The height isnt due to culture its due to evolution. Human height is due to diet of your ancestors. If your ancestors ate more protein they tend to be taller and have more upper body strength.

I thought the Klitschko's are from Krugastan or something like that. In any case Ukraine and Russians are slavs, and we should all be one. Hey my dad is from northern Ukraine and he married my mom who is Russia.

Well, according to some Ukrainian nationalists, Russians are not truly Slavic, they are Asian (Mongols-Tatars). This is a ridiculous claim. For instance, look at this picture:

Russians are Slavs in my best estimation. So are Ukrainians.
