Joseph Parker officially moved into title contention after surviving a stiff test from veteran contender Carlos Takam in their heavyweight title eliminator Saturday evening at Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau City, New Zealand.

Scores were 116-112 (twice) and 115-113 in favor of Parker, the unbeaten local hero who is now the mandatory challenger to the heavyweight title held by England's Anthony Joshua.

Decent heavyweight contest, though the step up in class for Parker did little to convince me that he is a genuine contender, let alone elite. He has speed but his power is overrated; a decent chin, but questionable stamina. His poor defence will certainly be exposed by any of the current champions.

Great fight, I had it 7-5 Parker, close but clear.

Parker showed a lot of grit, heart and a rock solid chin, but no matter how well you take a shot, you can't be that defensively irresponsible at heavyweight. He squares up, backs up in straight lines way too much and is to straight punches and left hooks.

He needs to sharpen up defensively before stepping in with Joshua, until then take 3 or 4 more fights against guys on a similar level to Takam (Jennings next would be great)

Massive step up for Parker though, he's passed the acid test

how can you not be convinced that he's a genuine contender after he just beat a genuine contender?

i agree that he is flawed, but his positives outweigh the negatives and he still has time to learn. he may not retire undefeated but i'm sure he will be a menace in the HW division for a long time and give us some great fights

Parker is nothing special except his speed. Probablg due to the massive step up in class. Felt sorry for Takam as this is probably one of his last chances of getting a title shot.

Anyway this fight proved why you should be brought up gradually instead of going straight into top class opposition.

              Joseph Parker blows.
The only rounds he could edge are the ones Takam allowed him to by doing nothing.
And still they were only at most edged.
Takam had all the dominant rounds and Parker at his best looked extremely ordinary and mediocre.
The best thing about him is that he will guarantee me at least one absolutely brutal knockout loss.

the heart and intelligence that he showed was very impressive. i'll never write off a fighter if he displays these two attributes in particular. most prospects who fail fail because they fall short in at least one of those areas

Sorry but Fury, Wlad, Povektin, Wilder, Joshua, Ortiz, and Haye destroy Parker
