I think that fight is the exact opposite to ******, it's actually the smartest one he can make at this point, AT 160 FOR REAL, because:
1. He will GAIN the respect of most real boxing fans, by defending the belt for the 1st time at the real weight limit, 160, vs. a real middleweight contender, Lemieux who actually hits similarly hard as GGG, but is just way more one-dimensional and has zero defense.
2. He won't lose the belt, if him and GGG agree to a step-aside fee for GGG, with a written contract promise that, if Canelo defeats Lemieux at 160, then his next fight will be with GGG at 160 as well.
3. I really think this fight could actually do better than the fight with Khan in PPV buys (again, only if it takes place at 160, as it should be), because it wouldn't be a mismatch, it could actually potentially be the fight of the year because two hard-punchers who never back down or run like cowards like the likes of Lara, etc. will get at it and it would be an all-action fight for sure.
4. That real risk of losing is what would make this particular fight vs. Lemieux at 160, a very interesting and attractive fight, for both the casual and the so called "real" boxing fans. Canelo and his team KNOW perfectly well that he is not ready to face GGG at 160 before fighting a real middleweight contender before GGG, no way. He needs at the very least one preparation fight at 160, and what better than a fighter with the style Canelo likes best, a go-forward one-dimensional hard puncher? He did GREAT vs. Angulo, which is a guy very similar in style than Lemieux, only slower, but still, Canelo is faster than Lemieux anyways. If he defeats Lemieux as convincingly as GGG did, then all boxing fans will be in for a treat next.
Summarizing, I believe the very best next fight fight for Canelo is exactly that one, vs. Lemieux at 160 and if he beats him up like he did Angulo, THEN he will be ready to give GGG more than a run for his money.
