According to WBC Rules, the challenger gets 30% of the total purse split.

So Canelo gets 70%, and Golovkin gets 30%.

    End of debate!

If Canelo asks for a catchweight, he has to give more £££ to Golovkin. Golovkin enters the negotiations with a 30% split already!
Robert Guerrero, when he faced Floyd, was a mandatory defense, and he got nowhere near the 25% split that WBC rules state is owed in a bid situation; heck, Guerrero tried to bring that up in the talks, and Floyd immediately threatened to move on to negotiating with Devon Alexander (sutting up Guerrero real quick).

Gennady Golovkin is not going to get anywhere near 30% of the pot; Alvarez easily does 4-5 times the business that Golovkin does.

If Golovkin camp asks for anywhere near that, he gets handed the belt, and Alvarez moves on:

Alvarez vs Rosado, from Aztec Stadium, on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Because Floyd has turned boxing fans into fans of the business, not the sport.

Literally everyone wants to see this fight, and casuals would buy it after hearing they're both big hitters and aggressive fighters.
Yeah in a fight where his opponent (Wade) probably got between $100-250k. I think $10-15 is reaching to say the least, and I think GGG would kill the negotiations if he tried for that kind of figure. Whilst the promotion may gain momentum, I still don't think it is a slam dunk ppv success. The carrot for GGG is that if he wins he truly will become a crossover star and can then have successful ppv's in the future. Every top fighter needs a launchpad, and it is normally beating an existing name that gets you there.

Khan is more of a household name than GGG right now, also a significant chunk of Khan's purse would have come from Frank Warren's bid for the UK tv rights. Plus that fight was far less of a risk to Canelo, and if you really want to get into the nitty gritty of boxing business...that matters! GGG will have to swallow his pride if he wants this fight, he will have to concede a lot, just like Floyd did when he fought De la Hoya a small term sacrifice (was still by a mile his best purse up to that point so not really a sacrifice) turned into a long term gain.

Don't forget that $5 million would over double GGG's best purse and is pretty much a retirement fund.

$5 million is more than most fighters got against Floyd when he was at the top of his ppv cycle, and think about some of the guys that he fought, pretty much everyone on that list was a bigger name than GGG is now. I think Marquez made something around $5 million against Floyd. Post De la hoya - Canelo, Cotto, Hatton, all made more but they were bonafide draws in their own right, and Pacquiao was obviously a mega fight.

Mosley, Maidana, Guerrero, Ortiz, Berto all made less.

The same goes for most of Pac's opponents on the same stretch, and in both Floyd's and Pacquiao's case they were selling 800k-1.5 million consecutively for a few years, so I don't know where you guys pull these numbers from. There is no way GGG will see that type of money.

            Because 30% of $0 is $0.

Agreed with all that. If Canelo wants a weight advantage, he needs to cut GGG in for more money.

Canelo doesn't fight GGG for a long time though. Count on it.

                  Wade got $500k.

You're right with a lot of the stuff you say - particularly that Golovkin isn't as a well-known name as Khan.

You're also right, on reflecting that $10 - 15 mil would be reaching, and that this should be considered a launchpad. With that in mind, your figure of $5 mil seems a lot more reasonable.

Regardless, I think if it goes to purse bid it would be a 55-45 split, so I reckon Golovkin's best bet would be accepting around 66 - 33 split, at 160, for the belts. He'd probably get more than $5 mil from that; the Khan-Canelo fight did something like $18 mil profit off 560k PPVs and the gate. Realistically, I actually see Canelo-GGG doing more PPVs than Canelo-Khan. I think more people actually want to see it, and would be willing to pay for it.
