Comments Thread For: "Fighting Words" - Canelo, Khan, Golovkin and The Inevitable

by David P. Greisman - The fight between Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan was marketed as a battle pitting power against speed. That much was true, though it is never truly that simple. What also matters is how that power or speed is used. It depends on who is delivering it and who will be receiving it.

Anyone notice in the post fight interviews that Canelo didn't face GGG after inviting him into the ring. Nor the fact that Max keller**** wasted a perfectly good opportunity to bring both fighters together. And HBO producers had their heads up there asses on this one as well.
Another question I had, why no pre-fight night weigh ins. Canelo trying some damage control knowing he'd get flamed coming in at over 175'ish lbs??!!?? Shameful display on so many levels
I would say team GGG needs to start bringing a large entourage ( or gang depending on how you look at it) with him everywhere he goes like the rest of the big time fighters. Then maybe that would even the terms of being called not the ring and open the door to talk **** back maybe. That display only proved canello's weakness and insecurity in fighting GGG.

One take away from this fight for me was...how great Cotto really is. Always thought he was a great fighter. But just as khan was the smaller guy, Cotto took Canelo's punches. But what i really learned was how good of a defensive fighter Cotto is. Besides v mayweather/pac. This fight elevated Cotto in my mind. But let me be clear im not an advocate for a canelo/cotto rematch that would be asinine. Bring on GGG. Also guys treat yourself to GGG v chavez jr sparring.

So Canelo must face GGG next at 160, if not shame on him?

Funny how the author thinks GGG would be at a disadvantage if he is asked to make a weight lower than 160. But Canelo wont be by putting up 5 more pounds for weight in?

Fact is Canelo is the A-side. If GGG wants the big bucks he will have to concede on the weight. If GGG was so eager for a challange, then he can always move up and face Ward, and get schooled. But it is money what he is really after.

Canelo was the b-side with Gayweather, he had to give up 4 pounds to make the fight happen. He never cryed about it, and he had good reasons to, given that Cotto was not handicapped at SWW to face Mayweather.

So basically its up to GGG to make this fight happen.

          So much misinformation here.

Canelo wouldn't be going up 5 lbs. Both fighters weigh almost the same in the ring, with Canelo being heavier. He can cut weight easier because he's 25. He won't look as skeletal during weigh on, that will be the only difference.

He didn't drop 4 lbs for Floyd. He dropped 2. And he did cry about it, and he still brings it up in every interview. Floyd was also significantly smaller man.

If you can't understand the difference between 2 lbs at age 23 against a smaller man and 5 lbs at age 34 against a bigger man, you're just a fanboy.

Canelo said he will fight GGG at 160!

During the post fight interview Canelo said GGG can come in at 160. We'll see if that's true or not.

Canelo has no trouble making 160. Everybody that knows and follows boxing knows this to be a fact. Do you know that Canelo re-hydrates to 170-175 after the weigh in? And I'll let you take a wild guess as to why Canelo has stayed at around 155 since 2010. If you guessed that he did it for the money, you are correct! The fight before Floyd, he weighed in at 153.5 against Austin Trout and for Floyd he came in at 152 so it's not true that he gave up 4 lbs to make the Floyd fight happen.

Staying in that 155 range also allowed the Miguel Cotto fight to happen and those are the two biggest fights of his career. You take Floyd and Cotto out and there really isn't much fame and especially money left.

Now it's time for him to fight a guy that is almost as big as him. Will he do it or will he try to fight somebody like 145 Pacquiao instead? Either way I'll watch it.

Galloindio , right on point. Cabelo has made the most of his opputunities with the weight. Now it is time to fight GGG. However if he fought Pac , i wouldnt be mad. I think Pac would do way better than Khan. Would be fun while it lasted!

I respect Cotto and like his style but my take away from the Canelo fight was how overrated Alvarez is. Miguel's best days are behind him and despite winning the MW title, I don't see him as a true MW.
Alvarez, faced by an older, smaller man still couldn't stop Cotto or even dominate him.
Canelo best win was probably against Lara, which was close. The KO of Khan will add to his rep but I'm not sold on him being an elite fighter.

                  Caneloweight!

Canelo did what he was expected to do, destroy a welterweight with a glass chin, period! What he did show us was that he is bothered by speed but when you can't get his respect because of lack of power coming from 147 to Light Heavyweight, which is what Canelo walked in the ring as, he figured he could walk through some of those punches easily which he did. Although if you looked closely his face had started to show some wear from the punches of Khan. Now all I saw after the fight, and during the interview with my friend Jerry Olaya, was someone who thought he was unbeatable now and was riding the "high" of KO'ing a 147lber brutally. I'm sure the next day he said to himself, pinche madre, what did I do last night when I said I would fight GGG at 160! I'm sure he will come up with an excuse, which I really hope not, to not fight GGG. I saw nothing in this fight that remotely even says that Canelo can beat GGG, what I did see is GGG will destroy Canelo the same way he did Lemiuex! It will be the usual walk you down beat down that GGG is known for not too mention that Canelo is tailor mad for GGG because he won't be hard to find. I think once Canelo feels the power and gets dropped his whole world will crumble around him because there will be no plan B. In Canelo's mind he would go into the fight thinking this is gonna be Khan all over again. I just hope and pray that this fight gets made!

Canelo purposely drops weight for the weigh in - so he can fake that he's not a middleweight

he would make 160 good and would not need to restrict his diet to fake that he's a 154er

                    so you're a mong
