  • The Great Bernard Hopkins says GGG should fight Kovalev, whats wrong with him?

So Bhop is regarded one of the best MWs of all time and generally one of the best fighters of all time.

    Some facts about Bernard
    1. Hopkins is 6′1″ and fought at Middleweight exclusively until age 41.
    2. Hopkins unified the MW division at age 39.
    3. Hopkins only moved up in weight after losing his titles to Jermaine Taylor.
    4. Hopkins best wins at MW were against smaller fighters like Trinidad and De La Hoya.

    Some facts about GGG
    1. Golovkin is 5′10″ and just turned 34.
    2. Golovkin is close to breaking Bernard's record of consecutive defenses at MW.
    3. Golovkin has been mandatory for Canelo's WBC belt for years.
    4. Golovkin, same as BHop wants to unify the division, still needs belts from Canelo and Saunders.

Now suddenly Hopkins says GGG needs to move up to LHW and fight Kovalev.
Kovalev has 2 fights lined up and signed, he will face Andre Ward at the end of the year what is considered a 50/50 fight.

Kovalev is not avaiblable to fight until next year and now BHop says GGG should drop all his belts and mandatory positions, should forget about the unification with Canelo and should do exactly what?

Wait for one year until Kovalev can fight him? I always respected Bernard but he does not make sense at all lately. I understand he is with Golden Boy but.. come on.

What is wrong with Bernard Hopkins?

He is Canelo's promoter... Nothing else to it. Not just with Golden Boy, owns a stake in the company.

Pretty much that Bhop can't be honest he needs to sell the Golden Boy fighters or should I say protect their most vital asset.

Hopkins was in prison and didn't start boxing until he was 23 years old. Golovkin started boxing at 8.

Bernard always made a lot of sense, i can't believe he put all these years and his reputation on the line by making such statements.

When Canelo was asked at the Cotto press conference if he would fight GGG afterwards, Canelo was flexing his muscles and said yes, he is ready.

Is Bernard afraid that Canelo gets beaten up by GGG so much that he will never be the same?

I don't see the pressure on Canelo/Golden Boy dropping anytime soon.

Also it's interesting to see that Hopkins only moved up when he was over 40 years and lost all his titles. It was a business decisions and BHop has always been a huge Middleweight at 6´1"

bernards an old fool, isnt recommended for people to fight into their 50's and this is why, because all them punches to the head have started to mess with his brain cells (and there wasnt many there in the first place), kovalev is twice the size of golovkin you fool, 'proving yourself' doesnt mean fighting people youve got no chance against

                Bernard started at age 7.

Age started boxing: I started at seven as a youth. Then I went to Graterford (prison) for five years and I picked it back up in there. But (I started) as a pro in ’88. So I started at seven.

Hopkins was very focused on boxing while in prison, and was mentored by the former prison champ, and guy who took Hopkins under his wing when he found out he was the nephew of a guy he fought in the pro's. I've heard his prison record over those 5 years was 95-4.

But Wilson – a three-time middleweight champion within the Pennsylvania penal system – saw something else in Hopkins, something of value that could someday prove to be the angry young man’s ticket to a better life on the outside.

It was almost an inevitability that Hopkins, who had an idea of becoming a boxer upon his release from prison, and Wilson would gravitate toward each other. Years before Hopkins heard the sound of that gate slamming shut behind him, his now-deceased uncle, Art “Moose” McCloud, who posted an 11-8 record as a pro, had swapped punches in the ring with Wilson. But it was not an inevitability that Wilson and Hopkins would form a bond, one of mutual respect and appreciation, that has lasted as long as it has.

“Artie could have been good, but the street got him,” Hopkins said. “Anyway, once Smokey found out I was Artie’s nephew, we sort of got attached. He started training me. We had tournaments against other prisons. Two times a year, we had box-offs. I was middleweight champion for 4½ years, the Pennsylvania equivalent of (former light heavyweight contender) James Scott in Rahway (a New Jersey prison).

“If I didn’t go to the gym at 1 o’clock, guess who came looking for me? Smokey Wilson,” Hopkins said. “And let me tell you, there were days when I didn’t feel like training. I know that sounds hard to believe now, but where do you think I got that from? Smokey taught me to stick it out, even in the worst days of my life. He was like a big brother looking out for a little brother.
