Whilst I respect Bernard for his great longevity and for fighting guys like: Tarver, Dawson, Calzaghe and Kovalev etc, he only did that from 2006 onwards, where he was in a position where he had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
You've also got to consider that Bernard is 6'1, with a 75" reach.
The question is, would he have gone through the weights had he been GG's size? GG is 5'10, with a 70" reach.
Bernard would never have fought Kovalev had he have been in GG's current position at 34.
What utter rubbish.
Dude, Hopkins fought Kovalev when he was 50.
You wouldn't have a clue what may have played out.
You wouldn't have a clue what may have played out.
In my honest opinion, it's not rubbish at all.
I don't care that he fought Kovalev at 50. I give him all the credit in the world for that, but Bernard had no intentions of taking risky fights when he was at MW. He made incredible sacrifices both mentally and physically to remain in an overall weak MW division for 12 years, and he only moved up in 2006 after he'd lost to Taylor twice. And when he moved up to LHW, his MW legacy was secured and he was in a position where he had everything to gain and nothing to lose.
When he was at MW he was happy to wait for 6 years until he finally had the opportunity to unify the division. And at that point, there were far better potential fights for him at SMW and LHW. In 2002 after he'd became the undisputed champ after King's MW tournament, he had the opportunity to rematch Roy Jones at a CW. It would have been one of the biggest fights in the world at the time. The P4P number 1 and 2 fighters in the world squaring off. But Bernard wouldn't take the fight. Mark Taffet of HBO has confirmed that Roy's team offered Bernard $6m, that included a comeback fight on HBO had he have lost, yet he turned it down and wanted $10m. He then spent over a year out of the ring before coming back to fight Morrade Hakkar.
Just prior to his fight with Joe Calzaghe in 2008, he spoke of the sacrifices he'd had to make to fight at MW, and he admitted that he could have moved up to LHW around 6 years earlier than he did, had he have really wanted to. So what does that say to you? It speaks volumes. The LHW division was much stronger than the MW division, and Bernard was physically bigger than almost all of his MW opponents. He's 6'1, with a 75" reach. Gennady Golovkin is 5'10, with a 70" reach. So the question is:
Would Bernard have fought at LHW against the likes of Tarver, Calzaghe, Dawson and Kovalev etc, if he'd have been the same size of Golovkin?
In my opinion, the answer to that question is no. If you don't agree, that's fair enough. But that's how I see it. Again, not only do I believe that, but I also know that Bernard never fought Kovalev type opponents in his 30's whilst he was still at MW.
All all things considered, I stand by my opinion that Bernard would never have jumped up two divisions in Golovkin's current position at 34.

Hopkins beat a lot of world-class fighters..... how many has Golovkin beat ?
And good luck attempting to convince anyone that Hopkins era was worse than this era..... this is likely the worst middleweight era ever.
The REAL question is..... would Hopkins have stayed at 160 if he had no big fights on the horizon and no world-class opponents on his resume?

GG hasn't beaten any great fighters yet. But neither had Bernard at GG's current age.

I won't be trying to convince anyone that this era is better than Bernard's.

Bernard DID stay at 160 when there were no big fights on the horizon.
Go and look at his resume. This is the point I've made. Bernard picked up Roy's IBF belt that had been relinquished at the 2nd attempt. He then defended it for 6 years before King put together his MW tournament in 2000. So he stayed at MW just like GG is doing now. Which is why I know that he would never have fought Kovalev at 34 if he was now in GG's shoes.
He's telling GG to do something that he never did himself at his age. It's just BS.

Firstly, age has nothing to do with it, not sure where you got that from.
Golovkin is 34yo, had nearly 400 amateur fights, and has been a pro middleweight for more than a decade.
I don't think age has anything to do with this, but time is certainly not on Golovkin's side.
Secondly, Hopkins is talking ****, Kovalev/Golovkin will never happen, don't know why you're worrying about it.
But thirdly, I don't see any difference whatsoever between Hopkins comments above, and Loeffler's assertion that a proven vet like Ward needs to beat Barrera ands Kovalev in order to earn a shot at Golovkin..... and yet the Golovkin fans all flew with that one LMAO

My gripe with Bernard's comments is entirely to do with age. Because again, he's asking GG to do something that he wasn't willing to do himself when he was in GG's current position. Bernard spent 12 years at MW, and he held just 1 belt for 6 years. Even after he'd became the undisputed champ it still took him another 4 years to move up. GG has the same ambition that Bernard did to claim all of the belts and become the undisputed champ.
If Bernard had said that he'd like to see GG move up at some point in the future, then I wouldn't have had an issue with that. But he's basically told him to move up like he did. But again, the circumstances are completely different. Although Bernard deserves a lot of respect for what he's achieved, he's been hypocritical. It's easy to sit back and tell guys what they should and shouldn't be doing. If he's questioning GG's ambition, he needs to review his own career. He's telling GG to move up, yet he turned down a lucrative rematch with Roy and then fought Morrade Hakkar. He's just talking nonsense. I agree with you that time isn't on GG's side though, and I doubt he'll have the great longevity that Bernard enjoyed.

I don't think that Hopkins is being hypocritical at all.
Also, Hopkins can say whatever the hell he likes.
Same with any other truly great fighter.
I just wouldn't listen to Hopkins when he has his promoter cap on.
I think that was just an offhanded tongue-in-cheek comment..... like Roach just stating that Pacquiao will fight Canelo.
It's just nonsense, Golovkin does not have to fight Kovalev, and Bernard/Gennady/Sergey ALL know that fight will never happen.
Those comments were Canelo-protection comments, pay them no mind.
Hopkins knows whats up man..... if anything, he was likely taking a dig at that idiot Loeffler, who stated that Andre Ward must be beat Kovalev to earn a Golovkin fight.
He was likely slapping Laughler in the face with his own wet fish.
