A long time ago the ref took a few extra seconds to make Dempsey go to a neutral corner giving Tunney a little extra time to beat the count and recover and it became famous as the long count. Today it would be a very short count. A boxer may be badly hurt when they are knocked down. By the time some referees have finished asking the down fighter a bunch of questions and given him all the walk to me tests the once hurt boxer has recovered and the fighter who knocked him down is cheated out of a likely KO win.

its seems as if some people dont realize there is a certain amount of physical pain and punishment that is involved in boxing.

him asking is he ok standard operating procedure. some refs dont even ask and just judge for themselves opening up themselves for criticism of being overprotective.

if he couldnt answer a question that means he's either too scared to say he cant go on or he's too out of it and has diminished thinking hence he cant properly defend himself.

i thought the ref did a pretty good job.

Last night referee Jack Reiss' referring was atrocious. He obviously had a fighter in there that didn't want to continue. For instance, Ortiz tried very hard to not to beat the ten count and didn't beat the ten count by slumping down at the count of six before he was eventually counted out on his feet by Reiss. Reiss tried to buy Victor some extra recovery time after counting him out but Vicious wanted no part of that. He simply wanted out and quit. That was a corrupt move on Jack Reiss' part.
