Comments Thread For: Is Gennady Golovkin's Future Only Now Emerging?

By Cliff Rold - Welterweight Errol Spence had the sort of break out performance last Saturday night that leads to both to instant excitement and trepidation. There is a fine line between a fighter who is genuinely the goods and one who looks it only to be bought into before the proof is fully in.

... after the WBC hands Golovkin their 160 belt, the WBA (in their push towards consolidating their champions) will likely mandate Golovkin to fight Daniel Jacobs, another fight in a long string of fights that the boxing public seems happy to give Golovkin a pass on.

In Jacobs, Golovkin would face a 29 year old, big framed (6'1"), fast-twitch middleweight, relatively proven at the weight class, switch hitter, with pop in both hands.

Hilraious to see folks continue to act like there's no one their for Golovkin to fight (Erroll Spence Jr is just breaking into the top crust of fighters at 147, yet this author is already trying to project him up a full two weight classes, lol)

Funny, I was just thinking about a potential Spence Golovkin fight later down the road. Just depends on how long Golovkin sticks around for and how fast Spence is moved. Given that Spence was at 154 and he's young, seems quite possible he'll venture north to 160 at some point. Of course by then anything can happen with Golovkin, like moving up himself. It's fun to speculate. First things first though and I think Spence is ready right now for anyone at welterweight.

Spence is a big welterweight who could easy travel beyond 154...2 fights ago he weighed over 156lb would you believe ...I wouldn't fancy canelo getting in the ring with this kid....he's quick has power and he has that nasty streak you need to become that bit more special....canelo is being protected and will lose as soon as he actually fights a live wire...spence would beat him and so will golovkin

or canelo could grow balls so ggg wouldn't have to look for opponents at welter and lightheavy

Remember how long it took Hagler and it was against a blown up Duran.

"Alvarez might be the test, but if not, who is?" That's why GGG needs to fight Alvarez in 2016, and then hope for a rematch in 2017. If he wins the 1st @ 155, he can demand the 2nd @ 160. But if doesn't fight Canelo, then who? Saunders? GTFOH!

Yes. Agree. Jacobs is here right now. I don't think he has any intention to fight Golovkin unless mandated to do so by the WBA - and so far the WBA has been silent on that one.

Where are you standing chief? I would love to see a GGG/Jacobs fight. Is the 'boxing public' giving Golovkin a pass concerning a fight with Jacobs? Not sensing it anywhere. I think that would be a great fight, and I'd rather see those two mix it instead of someone like Lara. Are you saying the outcome is a foregone conclusion?
