Its deeper than that. The very lineal title these folks are constantly b1tch'n about has been contested at numerous catchweights over the years. Hopkins-DLH fought at 158. Martinez-Williams II was fought at 157. Martinez-Cotto was fought at 159. Cotto-Geale was fought at 157. Its never been an issue until now. And considering the resumes of Canelo and GGG. The one that has seemed most willing over the years to make big fights happen is Canelo. Can't say the same for Mr Golovkin.

Yeah, it makes sense to suppose if he wont defend the belt at the full 160 he should get stripped. But, take into account what I have already said then factor this next in also- the WBC is allowing the fight between him and Khan be for the belt at 155. The winner has 15 days to decide if he wants to fight the mandatory. What is to stop the winner from saying "yes, I want the fight and I will defend at 155...JUST LIKE I DID MY LAST FIGHT. The WBC has already set the precedent. All Canelo has to say is that he is willing to defend. To my knowledge, nothing in writing says that defence cannot be a catchweight.

True. I don't even think the WBC would strip Canelo's belt if GGG doesn't agree to a catchweight. They'd let Canelo keep the belt and fight other people. I don't see why they wouldn't. Canelo is a moneymaker.

The WBC have no choice but to stick to the terms of the contract. This is not their own rules we are talking about, this is the law. They were ordered to pay Graciano Rocchigiani $30million damages for breaking a contract with him and almost went out of business.

Pro boxing is a business as well as a sport. You can't just tear up a business contract and forget about it.

Here's what ISN'T going to happen: WBC strips Alvarez for trying to negotiate a catchweight and GGG declines.

If those two fighters can't negotiate a fight because Golovkin refuses to budge on weight, WBC will absolutely allow Alvarez to keep the belt. They view "middleweight" as any negotiated weight between 154 and 160.
