Why struggle to make weight in a relatively weak division, knowing that you can't unify, why there's better, more recognisable names in the division above? Joe's walking around weight was around 190 pounds. He could have moved up to LHW at any point.
So he should have gone from a 168lb fighter with no name and belt, and dropped the belt and became a 175lb fight with no belt and still no name?

Every fight is a slapfest from Calzaghe. I find it mighty funny that people made Joe out to be some legendary great when he open handed most every fight and fought the most dangerous fighters WELL past the sell date.

        No, what I'm saying is:

He was a big, fast, southpaw, who was very awkward to fight.

Yes, the Manfredo stoppage was horrific. However, saying that Canelo Alvarez would have beaten him, is absolutely RIDICULOUS. I've absolutely no idea why you think that would even have been a possibility. It's truly baffling.

Again, in the early 00's, the guy starved himself to make SMW, even though he knew he couldn't unify with Ottke, and there was nothing else on the horizon at the time. He held the lightly regarded WBO belt, fighting guys like Veit for £700,000. His walking around weight was around 190 pounds. So again:

Why would he have stayed at SMW, when he could have fought at LHW, against more recognisable names, in a stronger division?

I think we know the answer:

          Because he wasn't overly ambitious.

He was content doing what he was doing. He defended his belt 21 times, and only about 6 of those defences were mandatories.

Tell me why he couldn't have moved up?

He had a contract with Showtime, who wanted him to fight in the U.S.

The WBO offered him the opportunity to move up to LHW, by telling him that due to his number of SMW defences, they would make him the mandatory challenger to their current LHW champ if he was interested.

          • Joe Calzaghe, Roy Jones, and Bernard Hopkins would all ruin Golovkin.

            • I'd pick Calzaghe over most if not all of today's Super Middleweights.

                  Special fighters do special things

                  Joey NEVER did anything special.

Manfredo has admitted that Joe was the fastest puncher he'd ever fought. The first hard punch that Joe landed put manfredo into a defensive shell he couldn't take the power.
