I'm glad Mikey got his business situation worked out. Hope it was worth wasting so much of his prime. I think he should have fought Gamboa. I wonder why he wanted away from TR/Bob so bad?

First it was Ward, then Garcia... any other notable contract disputes in recent years where elite fighters lost prime years of their career just because.
Mikey has even less of an argument because he's not a young poor kid who got duped into a bad contract and knew nothing about the business. He comes from a famous family full of professional boxers and world class trainers who have all been around the park and back with contracts had access to top lawyers to read over the contract because of his family. They knew what was in the contract and at the time it was great for Mikey he was one of the highest and most overpaid young fighters/prospect in the game. His purses were bigger then most fighters his exposure on big undercards and prime cable dates was almost unmatched in boxing. He was not being paid peanuts far from it and for the first 5 years of his career he was actually grossly overpaid based on the revenue he brought in as a fighter. This is not about him being tricked into a bad contract because he was poor and couldn't read. lol

he saw the money shift that was going on with haymon fighters and what they were getting for fighting cab drivers and he wanted that money too as he was out the door trying to sign with haymon. Over 2 years ago rumors swirl he and Chavez are signing with Haymon all a sudden both have beef over money with Arum and this saga all started. Haymon made a power move to steal away Chavez and Mikey I think both ended up backfiring. Chavez is ruined and Mikey lost over 2 years of his prime.

I'm guessing he would have fought Gamboa if he wasn't required to sign an extension.

Probably for similar reasons that Oscar, Floyd & Miguel did. One would assume to get their best opportunities & best money. To have more control over their career. If Chavez Jr had taken boxing seriously post-Arum we could probably add him to the list. In a couple years we'll see which list of fighters Mikey ends up in.

I hope that's it because I like Mikey a lot but I do remember him saying something like "I don't feel like I am ready", which disappointed me.

Well I hope he gets back on track and fights top guys. I doubt he ends up like Chavez. Mikey is a hard worker and not a lazy, entitled, pothead.

            What do you do professionally?

Have you ever signed a contract and wanted to re negotiate terms or get a better deal i.e have you ever redone your mortgage?

Why aren't fighters allowed to seek the best deal for themselves?

People keep saying dumb stuff like, "he lost 2 years of his prime."

PRIME? I don't think people know what prime means.

It sounds like he was trying to stick with the contract. But as TR, & other promoters do, they tend to freeze you out from big fights if you don't sign a new contract extension. The bad business practice is on the side of the promoter not the fighter here.

I mean think about it if you sign with a promoter for x years you'd assume he'd have your best interests for x years wouldn't you? Then if he did good by you at the end of that period you'd resign with him right? Well many promoters put in most of that time only to trail off towards the end cuz they don't want you beating some big name guy & risk you leaving or getting your fair market value as a free agent. Then if you lose to the big name guy & have less value or lose a couple fights they can always cut you loose.

The fighter is in an extremely inferior position with the control & power promoters have over them in boxing contracts. Can't get a big fight without resigning (at a lesser amount than if you were able to test your free agency after winning that big fight), if you don't resign you don't get the big fight, if you resign & lose the big fight you can still get released lol. Its a virtual no lose situation for the promoter.

No it wasnt. It almost was up and he would have sat for the remaining months and forced TR to use money for nothing.

                    TR gave up

It was a never ending contract always full of stipulations.

He honored it but to get big fights he needed to extend it and didnt want to do that.

TR are in the wrong and im glad he got out. Now lets see what he can do. Thought he was a talent before
