The Heavyweight History, by the numbers. CRAZY!

OK, besides the Super Regular Silver Champion Emeritus, HERE is (in my opinion) what is really wrong with our sport of boxing and its current attempt to decimate its history.

I've researched, I have the names.

In the first 100 YEARS of boxing there were 38 world heavyweight champions (an average of two-and-a-half years each worth of championship reigns).

Now, in the last 31 years how many world heavyweight champions do you think there have been??

    FORTY-TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

(and that's not even counting all the guys who have won more than one. In the first 100 years only Patterson and Ali repeated. In the last 31 years there's been what? 10 or so?? If you count ALL the 80 world heavyweight champs PLUS the repeat champions (Ali counts as 3 times, Foreman and Patterson twice, etc.) and divide them into the number of years since the first champ, the average length of title reigns would be less than a year and a half each!)

ABC orgs have watered down AND diluted all the divisions. Many say boxing is better now because it is more of a worldwide sport. I disagree. If we had onechampion per weight class I would be inclined to agree, but that's not the way it is.

Me to. You use to be able to identify a champion by a particular belt, but those days are gone with all the different orgs and their sub titles.

I agree 100% with jabbo it's the proliferation of all of these paper titles and frankly a lot of the blame must be laid at the feet of the promoters that use these "titles" as bargaining chips for money fights. Good to see you back scully you're definitely one of the most knowledgeable and undisputedly the only one posting that has trained a world class fighter. I think we might be the last of the old aol forum jab lol good to see you're still around buddy.

Multiple titles has definitely been the biggest issue with the popularity of boxing in my eyes. Not even the average hardcore fan can keep track of all the title holders. Thats a huge problem. If the average hardcore fan can't even track all the titles holders for sure the average casual boxing fan isn't gonna have the desire to even follow boxing in a serious way cuz its structure makes no sense with all the guys claiming to be the best. This lack of passion & desire by all boxing fans have damaged the sport down to its core.

AOL was a lot of fun. Hard to believe that was the better part of a decade ago. Gouch was a great guy, a real class act. I've lost several online friends over the years, but him and GJC from this sites history section were my favorites.

I agree. It is very pathetic and waters down the championship. The belts are really getting to be obsolete with every year. Wlad held them together for a long time, but he slips up against Fury and bam. The IBF jumps right on their opportunity to split it back up. The future of the title looks pretty bleak, especially given the Charles Martin "reign".

Greed! The sport has always been dedicated to greed but the selfishness of the new promotion companies trumps the old timers.
Mayweather and Oscar along with Haymon were going to feature the "sport" and open competition but the reality is that there the same as the past greeders!

Personally I pay no attention to the federations the belts they have no meaning for me.
I evaluate the individuals skills just as every boxing trainer would and make up my mind where to place the man in the history of his division then his p4p placement in history.

All athletes today are bigger, faster, stronger.........and dumber!
They don't have much experience to capture a title and even less in maintaining it! Today only Floyd and Wlad have survived but I'm not that impressed with them because they orchestrated their mid & late careers
and seemed to have "groomed" the opposition in prelim bouts then moved them up as needed.

Eliminate the "junior" division in regards to belts and titles and weigh in the morning of the bout!
I do believe this could help with some organizational processes that are lacking. The two day weigh in was supposed to be a health benefit for fighters but it is clearly abused now with re-hydration up to 20+ pounds!
Leaving the weight class in the dust. If your representing the light heavyweight division you shouldn't weigh 196 when the bell rings!

Hello John, I see Chad is back with Brian. I hope he can jump start him if theres light left there!
