Sergio: I wish Lucas will keep fighting

A little translation for you folks. I hope you like it.

Sergio Martinez had some words for Lucas Matthysse after finding out that his friend won't fight in the Canelo-Khan night. "If Lucas wants to take some time off boxing today, he probably won't come back" he said.

Martinez told the press: "If Lucas makes a step aside or a step back, it's very difficult to come back. It's now, still hot/active, where he has to decide if he wants to keep boxing", he commented.

As was informed by Eric Gómez (GB Promotions vice) Matthysse is not 100% recovered to come back on May 7th.

Regarding the Postol fight and boxing in general, sergio said: "You have to see the price he wants to pay for a victory. Today, I have a broken leg and I can't move my shoulder, but It's the price I wanted to pay. It was my life or my opponent's life. I was totally convinced. But not everyone is the same. Lucas has overwhelming talent, but maybe his priorities are different, which is logical and understandable. He has a daughter, it's difficult. I wish he keeps fighting, I'm his fan. I consider myself his friend and he's a great guy.

In that sense I respect him a lot because I knew him and I discovered a great person. I think that if he wants to keep boxing he should do it, but also keeping track of his health. Personally I would have done somethin different. To beat me you had to kill me eighteen times."

Sergio literally fought until his body could no longer fight at all.

Not sure if I completely agree with him here though. Maybe a little more time off could have done him better in his career.

Ah, he would know better than I would.

... Sergio somehow was a lucky guy -- he was very gifted as well... On another hand, Matthysse was followed by bad luck... He wanted to retire after the Garcia fight and I'm glad he didn't -- because that fight was pure bad luck... But after the Postol fight I can understand him...

That's exactly why Martinez has that opinion. Mentally, Matthysse doesn't want to continue, but physically he can still go. Unlike Martinez, who still wanted to keep fighting, but physically can't anymore. I bet he would love to fight again if he could, but Matthysse still has that option.
