Floyd mayweather was the WORST period ever in boxing. Ever. Mismatches, fighting many fighters over the hill, never testing himself thoroughly, we still don't know how good Floyd would have been had he fought people in their absolute prime, he had 19 years to do it & failed. His fans are an even bigger joke, how can you celebrate another mans earnings?? I mean how!!!?? Lol what is the point in it? They don't get a dime from him lol my first match to watch live was De la Hoya Vs Trinidad, when the best fought the best. I hope he never comes back, ever.

Boxing needs stars like Floyd, but it's a lot bigger than any one generation of men, never mind one man. If it survived the loss of the Fab Four and Mike Tyson it will survive the loss of Floyd Mayweather.

I beg to differ. I actually think it is going to be the other way around. Floyd's relevance is only tied to boxing and on the premise that he is still an active fighter especially with #50 lurking. His ego and bravado are all tied to the fact that he is the top dog in boxing. Assuming that he is truly retired, I will be shocked if he doesn't go into depression a few years from now. Floyd has to spend money and have all these material things, that is his identity, he has to be flashy with all his yes man by his side but what happens when he's no longer the top dog and all the glitz, glamor and riches that comes with it are no longer there, then what? When your investment outside of active fighting are money pit projects like TMT Music Group, The Bad Medina Makeup line and Mayweather Promotions with no marque fighter, you don't need me to tell you that you are already in trouble down the line. I hope am wrong but I think the signs are clearly there.

Boxing is better off with Floyd retired, I'm ready for Manny to hang them up too. It was a good era for welterweights.

It takes time for new stars to come into their own but there will inevitably be someone new crushing PPV's in a few years. Floyd's reign was a profitable and and relatively low risk venture.

They're trying to make it Canelo, and he is the current heir apparent... but if the guy can't make operate as a true middleweight then he's going to be a huge disappointment.

My realistic hope is that we see Canelo get in with Lemieux or Hassan N'Dam- just somebody relatively sturdy- but at 160 pounds.

These guys are misunderstanding the point Sr. was trying to make. The Floyd Manny rivalry kept boxing on life support and in someway gave boxing a resurgence in the mainstream. When Tyson and De La Hoya started to decline I noticed that the interest in the sport had dissipated tremendously. Once Floyd beat Oscar and then Manny beat Oscar that created two boxing superstars and a new rivalry. That rivalry energized boxing like a shot of adrenaline. Now that the rivalry has been settled in what was an anticlimatic fight the general public has moved on. Canelo is not as good as he's made out to be. He's a very good fighter but not a special talent. Boxing needs special talents and guys who can market themselves in order to do well and I just don't see any special guys out there right now.

Boxing will go on but it's popularity will dwindle greatly.
