What does a boxing promoter like Top Rank really do?

If HBO pays the license fee that covers the figher purses, there is no financial risk for the promoter.

So basically all the promoter does is rent a venue (or a site fee), do public relations, and organize travel/lodging.

What are they actually doing that is that valuable?

If HBO turns down a fight, it seems like the promoter really has no ability to do anything to make the fight happen.

Pretty much. If Arum was smart he would find a way to make the fight instead of depending on HBO.

He's saying a Promoter should take some risk or have some hustle to them.

Marinate fights, mostly. And pretend to sell tickets.

Ding ding ding... you get it!

They seem like completely glorified wedding coordinators to be honest.

That's why Haymon is doing it right. His fighters aren't forced to be attached to a promoter if they don't want or need to be.

Revenues = License fees, gate, sponsorships, % of PPV

Expenses = site fee, promotion, travel, purses, office salaries, g&a

That's a guess so I welcome the NSB business experts to correct me.

Top Rank has expanded into being a full multimedia company, mostly thanks to Todd. They not only have a stable of fighters, but produce content top to bottom. Ever watch the undercards on toprank.tv? The do it all of that; video, audio, editing, direction, on-air commentary, etc. They also do PPVs themselves without the help of HBO, but havent done so in a while.
