What is going on with Roc Nation Boxing?

Worst major promoter in the business. Their first mistake was signing an old fighter on his way out. Their second mistake was signing a commentator who is a part-time boxer. Their third mistake was signing a fighter who can't draw flies to **** and apparently can't properly fill out a Visa application. But somehow they've managed to make things worse. They had a great deal with Gary Shaw and ****ed that up. They screwed Andrade and are getting sued by him. They created bad blood with the WBC by not paying Cotto's sanctioning fees when he refused to. Sometimes you gotta take a L. It wouldn't really had been an L because they were the lead promoter and made a lot of money from that fight. And as the lead promoter they did a horrible job. Looking from the outside in you'd thought Golden Boy was the lead promoter. Hopkins and Oscar were doing all the legwork and interviews.

Even with all those mistakes they could still fix it but for some reason they refuse to do so. I went to look at their website, which you have to really search to find. First I typed in rocnationboxing.com, nope. So I had to go to rocnation sports. Click the boxing link. Then click on one of the bios and it took me to their site, throneboxing.com What type of name is that for a boxing website?!?!? For those that don't know, Jay-Z considers himself the king of rap, hence The Throne. But that doesn't make any sense to the average boxing fan who is a white male in his mid-late 30's. Roc Nation really has a platform to introduce boxing to a younger generation. To those who follow their music. To those who go to their concerts. Jay-Z has 3 mil twitter followers and he rarely tweets so when he tweets you know it's important. He hasn't tweeted all year. He never even tweeted about the Canelo-Cotto fight. And from what I've read HBO and Golden Boy weren't happy about his lack of promotion.

But let's look at his extended Roc Nation family. Beyonce has 17 mil followers. Kanye West has 20 million followers. Kim Kardashian has 42 million followers. Rihanna has 47 million followers. DJ Khaled has 3 million followers and is the most followed person on Snapchat. And I haven't even totaled the number of followers their artists and athletes signed to Roc Nation sports have. If they all tweeted, Snapchatted, Facebooked the fights they could reach tens of millions of people. And it's free advertising for their fights and the sport. The Ward fight could be sold out if they put forth an effort. And how does a company that's primarily a music company not know Too Short is holding a 30th anniversary concert in his hometown on the same day, in the same city, as their fighter? Why even schedule the fight on that day?

This company doesn't know what they're doing. The ideas I put forth isn't rocket science or some marketing secret. This is all common sense. I don't see Roc Nation lasting long in boxing. They've burnt to many bridges in a short period of time. And I liked the fact they put boxing on BET. The more channels the more audience is exposed to the sport. They should change their name to Roc Bottom Boxing.

They will be out of business in two year's time, if not less. They have no idea how the boxing business works. Boxing is a very peculiar, non regulated industry, that's more illegal in its operations than Rigondeaux's fake visa.

They have made a series of poor decisions, I'm not sure if they will be able to sustain.

Do you know how many companies wished they had access to 132 million follows on Twitter? That's not even counting their other clients like Cano, Durant, and Sabathia. And that's not counting their other social media accounts. I know those aren't 132 million individual people but there are millions outside that network that'll see the retweets and tags. That company is sitting on a social media goldmine and refuse to use it. It doesn't cost them a dime.

Roc Nation tried to get the biggest stars they could. They had to try something.

Haymon went the other route though. Instead of paying crazy money for a Cotto or a Ward, he's got most of the opponents locked up. HBO does have more top fighters, but there isn't much you can do with them.

Business is all about timing. Roc Nation picked the worst time imaginable to try to get into boxing. They entered in the middle of a world war, with no allies. It's lunacy.

            This^^^^^^^

They remind me of the NFL team like dolphins or Redskins that "win" free agency every year by signing famous old names to huge money contracts

Like 50 cent's SMS promotions before it, Roc Nation will eventually realize investment in boxing isn't as easy as it looks and will eventually leave.
They're going to lose millions on Ward.

This I also believe can't be true. Average white fans in their 30's tend to follow UFC not boxing.

They overpaid for their fighters and will never make their money back. I like the enthusiasm but they don't know the boxing world.

They have definitely made too many mistakes for an entity with some name brand boxers (Cotto, Ward & Rigo).

And idk why they aren't taking advantage of the twitter presence & the musical acts they have connections to. I'd be making Rihanna or some hot new sexy singer/rapper hang out with Rigo to get him some press. Or the younger guys they got on the comeup. I'd be re-tweeting their fighters or hyping their upcoming fights/shows. How you could capitalize on it is debatable, but not doing anything at all isn't debatable.

And idk if bringing a hockey guy to run your boxing promotion is the best idea in the world.

LOL, but solid take. Roc Nation skipped dipping their toe in the water & jumped right in before realizing Haymon had soaked up most of the water & put it in his hot tub.

Should be interesting to see what they end up doing once Cotto is out (I assume after his next fight, but I think 2016 is his last year regardless), Ward wins or loses vs Kovalev (I suspect he wins, but whats next for him at 175 & does RN resign him) & Rigo continues to Rigo (I love Rigo, but I'm realistic about how his career is going & seemingly will continue to go). Do they sign more big name guys & do over, learning from their mistakes upon a reload? Or do they just call it a day with boxing?
