Most of team USA got very lucky draws. The only one that wasn't so lucky is Paul Kroll who will more than likely have to face Roniel Iglesias in the prelims.
AIBA should have done a better job with the draws. It makes no sense how Alberto Melian and Robeisy Ramirez had to fight each other so early in the tournament. Those two were the best boxers in that weight class (in this tournament). Then Robeisy gets robbed.
Meanwhile Shakur Stevenson has a very easy pass to the Semifinals (and he still struggled against the Colombian). It just doesn't make sense.

Arthur Biyarslanov (Canada) and Danielito Zorrilla (Puerto Rico) are the two best boxers at this tournament at 64kg and they have to face each other early in the tournament as well. It just doesn't make sense.
Meanwhile unknown boxers have to face each other and get easy passes to the semifinals.

AIBA has to fix this crap for the Olympics.
I also think they should start making Qualifications more difficult. A lot of the competition in this tournament is really poor. How about start having World qualifiers instead of Continental Qualifiers. It won't happen though, because they want to give everyone an opportunity.

Watch out for Antonio Vargas. National Golden Gloves Champ/Pan American Champ. Might be the best chance the US has to end this losing streak.

Continental qualifiers are necessary. You'll get some weaker qualifiers but you help promote the sport in those countries. Same as in soccer.

Yes! Antonio Vargas has a pretty tough draw. I don't understand how he didn't get seeded. He is the Pan American Games Gold Medalist after all.
I think that kid has the best chances to get a medal for the US. I wouldn't be surprised if he even gets the Gold. The only two boxers standing in his way are probably Misha Aloyan and Elvin Mamishzada.
Kid gets no love even though he's probably the only one that will bring back a medal from the Olympics. Unless he of course gets upsetted or has to face Aloyan early on. I think he can beat Mamishzada.
He does have a difficult draw here though. He has to go through the Dominican, Vargas already defeated him by split decision at the Pan Am Games. Then he has to face the number 2 seed, Yoel Finol. Vargas already has a victory over the number 1 seed. It doesn't make sense how Vargas was not seeded.

That's why I said it probably won't happen. I think they should make the qualifiers more difficult is all I'm saying.

Do they still just do random draws or is there some method of setting up the draws? I assume they don't go by AIBA rankings, which they probably should, cuz I remember these ****ty draws from back when I kept up with amateur tournaments closer back in the day. Believe there were some times I can recall where the #1-#4 guys in the world were matched up in the 1st round of world tournaments. Which is f#cking ******ed

I'm guessing it's random draws, but they should have some sort of method that improves these draws. The best fighters shouldn't have to face each other so early while random fighters get easy draws all the way to the medal rounds. The AIBA rankings sometimes don't make sense either though. At 64kg this fighter from Thailand is somehow ranked number 1, when the top two boxers in that weight class are Vitaly Dunaytsev and Yasniel Toledo. The Thai fighter is good, probably a top 5 fighter, but he shouldn't be the number 1 ranked fighter. It's whatever though, that's not the worst thing about the rankings.
It's BS when the top fighters have to face each other so early on when some unknown fighters get easy draws. It happens all the time though. AIBA doesn't do anything about it. It's almost like they do it on purpose to give a random boxer an opportunity of a life time.
At the 2012 Olympics Oscar Valdez had the toughest draw overall in boxing. He had to go through Shiva Thapa, Anvar Yunusov and John Joe Nevin just to get an Olympic Bronze. Meanwhile on the opposite end of the draw this Japanese fighter has an easy route to the Semifinals. It doesn't make sense.
Oscar Valdez had to go through two World Bronze medalist (Yunusov and Nevin) a future World Bronze Medalist (Thapa).
Meanwhile somehow someway this random fighter from Azerbaijan gets seeded number 2 in that weight class. Oscar was a World Bronze medalist himself.

AIBA has to get their crap together.
