Comments Thread For: Mrdjenovich Beats Matthysse To Avenge Loss, Regain Title

Jelena Mrdjenovich avenged a recent defeat to Edith Soledad Matthysse in the most sensible fashion - doing exactly the opposite as was the case the first time they met.

The strategy paid off, as she reclaimed her featherweight title while picking up one more in a 10-round unanimous decision win Friday evening at home in Edmonton, Canada.

Scores were 96-93 (twice) and 97-92 for the local favorite in their unified title fight, which aired live on TyC Sports in Argnetina (Matthysse's home country) and the United States.

No it wasn't. Though the ref was an ASSH0LE and clearly biased, I saw a pretty even fight. And the KD decided it for the canadian.

I could not believe how awful Soledad looked tonight. She was gassed even before the fight started WTF? She couldn't even punch like the first fight, it was crazy... of course he was gonna lose fighting like that. Maybe jetlag? she seemed like a total amateur the whole fight.

      Something was wrong...

And the facking canadean clinching and pretending not to... and the ref always warning Soledad for being fair? strange... she was not gonna win this unless she KDed at least once the canadean.

Agree w/ Maxi on this one - was anyone's fight heading into the 10th and final round. But yeah, ref was not exactly fair and impartial. Not going to say he was biased, but it certainly wasn't a performance that makes me want to see him in a big fight any time soon.

Jelena has been on the slide for a while IMO, but agreed that something seemed very off w/ Matthysse. She should've won this fight with room to spare - didn't seem to tire down the stretch, but just couldn't figure out how to create space and maintain momentum.

Wasn't so much hometown scoring (although 97-92 was far too wide) more so than Jelena winning on size advantage alone.

I think either one runs into trouble if they step to Amanda Serrano or Jennifer Han.

Funny thing about Jelena's career here in Edmonton is she is usually robbed in her own town. I been to a few of her cards where she clearly won the fight only to get a decision loss. There is no hometown favourite in politically correct Edmonton. It's actually quite astonishing how many locals have lost close fights. Usually it's tough to win a close decision in someone's backyard but not here.
