Comments Thread For: Chris Algieri: Errol Spence Hasn't Fought Anyone Near My Caliber

Chris Algieri has heard all the hype about Errol Spence Jr. becoming the next huge thing in boxing.

Algieri still doesn't know if it's justifiable because he isn't the least bit impressed with the type of opponents Spence has boxed during his three-year pro career. The former WBO 140-pound champion does know that he is by far the best foe Spence has agreed to face.

Finally, I get to really gauge this Spence kid. If Algieri does away with him, he's no better than C tier. If he beats Algieri , and does it in good fashion, he's atleast a B tier. Right now, he doesn't have a tier.

"Anyone near" ? Pft, calm down Algieri. Yes I think this is a step up for Spence but not as big of one as Algieri is suggesting.

Admittedly after Ali/Vargas, Douglas/Khurtsidze, and Imam/Granados I have become just a little bit reluctant to jump on Errol Spence in this one.

This is going to be a fan friendly fight. Spence will have his hands full. The experience that Chris is talking about will definitely play a major role in this fight. Exceptional talent and ability can overcome that experience, and although Spence has shown signs of that ability and talent, its never been against quality opposition. The bottom line is, if Algieri fights in his new aggressive style, Spence can pound out a victory. If Algieri goes back to his old style of sticking and moving, constantly keeping that jab in Spence's face, and throwing fast combos then tie him up, it will be a long and frustrating night for Spence. Chris has great foot work, decent speed, and some pop on his punches. I would love to see Spence win this, but I would not be surprised if Chris gets the upset. You don't fight the level of fighters like Provodnikov, Pacquiao, and Khan and not learn anything in the ring. If I was managing Spence, this would not be the fight I would make at this point.

Algeri definitley had big fight experience atp but he's not quite the "caliber" of opponent to give Spence his 1st L. Problem I have with Spence is I've seen him get caught and even shaken up with shots from less caliber opponents that would have him on shaky legs had it been a harder puncher, so he hasn't had to face any real adversity yet, and I get the sense that his chin may be a lil suspect it's just no one can stand up to his power long enough to really test as of yet Ive also seen him gas a bit and slow down alot around rd 6-7 so he might be draining to make 147 hes more like a 152 guy not a mw but no ww either... so imo Spence is good, heavy handed, good basic fundamentals but a lot of ?'s he lacks the head movement/slickness needed to become elite right now, he needs more pro experience with guys on the level of Algeri for a while. A fight I'd love to see down the line is Crawford vs Spence since Crawford in reality is clearly a welterweight weighing 155+ on fight nights.....

Algieri is right, but he almost got killed in two of his three biggest fights.

I agree with Chris. If Spence beats him by a safe decision I won't be impressed. We've already seen Chris beat by safe decisions. If Spence can do what Pac, Khan and Provodnikov couldn't I'll be ready to crown Spence.

This is a great fight I'm excited to see. I've already said Errol Spence will be at the top of the welterweight division soon enough. Let's hope he does prove that claim.
