He folds up & calls it a night quicker on the ground than any high level guy I can think of in the UFC. I believe both his previous submission defeats were around the 1 min mark which largely I'd call a super quick submission cuz typically there is a lot of setting up of subs in MMA & it can take awhile to work thru the defense & prevention tactics guys use against subs. Conor has little defense or prevention tactics to get out of subs or prolong his survival.
More time than not when a person quits one time, its nothing to do it again. I wont say he outright quit but he didnt give much resistance for the choke. He gave his back but didnt even attempt to get wrist control or grab an arm so he could roll out, grambie roll, or stand up

How can you call your self a martial artist, or a mixed martial artist when you dont even know how or attempt to get of a choke. As kids we all put that same hold on each other and learned how to get out of it.

I never tapped out, I ended up passing out at a state tournament because I refused to quit(thats the boxing in me)

Watching Holly Holm shadow box while being choked out brought on this question. she went out on her shield and didnt quit. Quitting is frowned upon in boxing. McGregor looked to be winded, frustrated that he couldnt put Diaz away. He admitted he was gassed. So there in lies the question. Did he quit? He gave his back and the choke was locked in for maybe two seconds before he tapped. that was the most basic yoke up, you learn that hold in the streets as a kid. He gave little resistance when he gave Diaz his back and seemed to be looking for a way out.

do you guys feel like he quit?
I'm still trying to figure out how the hell did he gas so fast.... while he wasn't draining down to 145.

Calling the bullshit card on this. There is ALWAYS an escape. McGregor just gave up.

You must've realized this when Diaz started actually SLAPPING him haha

some people seem to think you can eat whatever you want and not train as hard because you dont have to cut weight....that is a huge mistake

LOL but yea can't really disagree. I tend to think he's somewhat a victim of his own success or been reading his own headlines as they say. I think he had far too much confidence in his standup, KO abilities + sprawl game.

I've been comparing this L to Mike Tyson & I think you could compare it to Rousey too. Tyson was destroying guys in 90 seconds. Ronda was choking out people in 15 seconds. Why would you focus on anything else than destroying people in 90 seconds or choking people out in 15 seconds or think you need any other skills or not think you could fall back on your exceptional skills if things did go bad? Why would you not take those successful fight winning abilities for granted with the ease with which you've done things? Obviously thats wrong thinking, but I think when you are living that existence its easier to fall into the trap of it all & Conor has been destroying guys for the last 5 years give or take.

The thing with Conor vs Tyson or Rousey is Tyson & Rousey were much more likely to be delusional lets say about their abilities & unbeatability cuz they'd never lost as pros. Conor has went out twice via similar methods & cuz of a lacking ground game & seemingly has not learned anything from this huge hole in his game. Thats problematic for his future cuz he's got a big hole on the ground & it'll take years to fill it & he's still a top guy in the sport today.

I think he accepted defeat, but quitting has a very negative connotation, especially when referring to fighters. There's a difference between accepting defeat or honorably surrendering vs looking for a way out because things got a little complicated. Ortiz is a fighter that actually quits, but people often look for any reason to call fighters quitters and **** on them. Those people are idiots and don't deserve any respect from real boxing fans.

No, he had no other reasonable option.

He was completely gassed, had no energy to defend against a fresher opponent (who also happens to be a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and it was either tap out or leave it a few seconds longer and pass out. The result is the same so what's the point?

Yea, but the answers are never that simple. I'm inclined to think that he trains with guys that aren't truly pushing him in that area, coaches are not understanding or respecting the art. I'm sure he has had to train a lot in that area, but perhaps it's just going through the motions stuff and he doesn't have skilled guys cranking chokes on him like he should. I think he needs to get serious and spend a few months at someplace like AKA and get real, elite camp experience. His station and ego might prevent that but I've long said he's NOT a super-talented guy. He's an aggressive kickboxer being pushed because he's got an Irish warrior gimmick.

He is a martial artist though. He should be prepared to defend certain moves even if he doesnt utilize them. As a former wrestler, one of the first things you learn is how to get up and to control the opponents hands and wrists.

He really needs to get with some elite wrestlers and BJJ guys and work on his defense on the ground.
No he's not.... just cuz you learn how to throw some punches & kicks DOES NOT make you a martial artist.
