  • Did Conor McGregor quit? To tap or not to tap

I was a huge fan of MMA when it was actually mixed martial arts. Boxers vs kung fu.....shoot fighters vs BJJ, etc. now its all diluted to a basic style. A lil this, a lil that. I wrestled 2 years in high school and if you were in a position or in discomfort, you could tap. I never tapped out, I ended up passing out at a state tournament because I refused to quit(thats the boxing in me)

Watching Holly Holm shadow box while being choked out brought on this question. she went out on her shield and didnt quit. Quitting is frowned upon in boxing. McGregor looked to be winded, frustrated that he couldnt put Diaz away. He admitted he was gassed. So there in lies the question. Did he quit? He gave his back and the choke was locked in for maybe two seconds before he tapped. that was the most basic yoke up, you learn that hold in the streets as a kid. He gave little resistance when he gave Diaz his back and seemed to be looking for a way out.

do you guys feel like he quit?

There's nothing you can do when someone has a rear naked choke sunk in all the way. Doesn't matter what you do, tap, wave your arms around, just go limp. The fight is over.

I understand that.......when its locked in, you're toast..... It just look like he gave his back and gave little resistance as far as Diaz working the move.

Holly Holm got choked the fuvk out....he look like he gave up in my opinion. I'll give it another look

Conor's defense from the bottom is pretty crap if you saw the Mendes fight. Against a guy Nate's size he wouldn't last there.

I think he made a calculated risk: Give up his back for a chance to stand it back up. As soon as Diaz sees Conor's arms drop to push up, he grabs the exposed neck. They both had to know it was over then. Really no point in struggling, you have no leverage from that position.

yea, he had to give his back but he didnt have any sort of wrist control....now that you mention it....maybe he didnt know how to defend from that position. If he had an arm he could have rolled or stalled. IDK it looked kinda weird

He is a martial artist though. He should be prepared to defend certain moves even if he doesnt utilize them. As a former wrestler, one of the first things you learn is how to get up and to control the opponents hands and wrists.

He really needs to get with some elite wrestlers and BJJ guys and work on his defense on the ground.

He started out as an amateur boxer, he's always looked pretty sloppy on the ground to be honest. Yeah, he should have kept one arm lifted to defend himself instead of just doing a pushup with both arms down.

From what i know, by the time you're in the position he was, you know you're going to sleep anyway. No point in risking further damage when you know it's game over.

I'm not a Conor McGregor fan but it's easy to say he "quit" when we're not the one on the floor being choked to sleep.

It's the same with boxing, people calling out fighters for taking knees and quitting on their stools. So what? If they really fear for their health and career in the fight, then they rightly should get out of there and admit defeat.

If Floyd ever said anything right it's "there's nothing cool about taking punishment"

thats basic wrestling, and common sense. You gain control of one hand so your free hand can get you off the ground or in a better position

I agree...thats why I was asking for some feed back. I've been in that position before. I didnt tap. I was young and dumb as was like whats the worse that can happen. When I thought about tapping it made me feel like a quitter so I tried my best to get out of the move(I was in the Peterson hold) He didnt have an arm, so essentially he choked me the **** out lol. I wrestled in high school and train at my friends dojo for boxing, karate, BJJ and all types of martial arts.....chapman's shotokan Karate in ATL

I think losing is always kinda sorta quitting or a version of quitting by just trying less & less & seemingly accepting your fate. So I think like most guys who lose he quit, but I don't believe he purposely quit like I believe you are suggesting.

Fatigue makes cowards of men is the saying I was thinking when this fight was near its end. I think he was getting hit nicely too. I think the poor takedown he did was a poor & ill advised attempt to avoid potentially getting KO'd or to try to catch a breather, but with his poor ground skills (this isn't his first quick tap out if you are a casual MMA fan) it was like handing a baseball bat to your enemy & straight out asking them to hit you with it.
