Comments Thread For: WBA: Luis Ortiz-Tony Thompson Not Sanctioned as Title Fight

Misinformation travels across the internet at the speed of light. But unlike light, misinformation does not illuminate. Misinformation shrouds the facts in darkness.

One cannot always believe what one reads, and despite what you may have read on dozens of boxing websites, Saturday's fight in DC between interim WBA World heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) and veteran Tony Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) is not a title fight.

Yeah, like any of those reasons have stopped the scumbag WBA from sanctioning worse fights in the past.

I kinda have mixed feelings about this. It feels like they are punishing Thompson. He won't gain anything out of this and Ortiz can't lose anything.

Even if they insisted that Thompson could not win the title by winning this fight, it still ought to be possible for Ortiz to lose the title by losing this fight which then should set up Thompson/Ustinov for the vacant interim title.

who cares this was ALWAYS a stay busy fight because Ustinov didn't want to fight him now and their fight was mandated by June so Ortiz needed a stay busy fight so he's not out of the ring from Dec to June. I don't care about the politics and whether WBA want to label this an official defense or voluntary defense ect. Ortiz is knocking this old fool out and then getting a real fight on June for the right to fight Fury/Klitch.

Why should Tony get anything. Remember he doesn't even DESERVE this fight. He talked his way into this fight and the previous guy Dimitrenko who agreed to fight Ortiz pulled out a week later when he wanted a non refundable bonus meaning if he had a mysterious injury and pulled out the fight he would still get paid. Tony doesn't deserve a title shot in the first place so I could care less if he's eligible or not to win the title.

Not really a big deal with two other WBA champions in the division.

This fight probably shouldn't be sanctioned period. A 44 year old journeyman taking a fight on short-notice against a sharp shooting KO puncher. It makes Crawford/Lundy look competitive.

Nor should it be. One is semi-retired, might even be retired and the other has 1 big victory

                  Ortiz - Thompson not sanctioned

Does this mean that the gate will be affected, because of this decision by the WBA?
