Comments Thread For: Arum: Verdejo a Bigger Star Than Cotto Was At This Point

Bob Arum of Top Rank had a big star in Miguel Cotto, promoting him from his earliest days as a prospect and growing him from contender into a multi-division world titleholder and a headliner who drew huge crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Arum no longer has Cotto, who's now with Roc Nation Sports, but Top Rank does have lightweight contender Felix Verdejo. And Verdejo, who is still a few months shy of his 23rd birthday and is 19-0 with 14 KOs, is already an attraction in the Puerto Rican community.

Even if it's true at 20 fights Cotto had faced like 8 former champs. While verdojo has yet to stop fighting stumble bums

Your right, but that was also different times.

Ever since the Haymon welfare plan, fighters/managers are demanding easy fights for life.

The average fan has also become dumber. They don't know the difference between the tough fights Cotto took on his way up, and the bums these young guys are fighting today.

For Christ sake, people are crowning Spence and he's beat absolutely nobody.

Verdejo has the makings of a superstar no doubt. By comparison Cotto at 19-0 (not age) was more popular. He had already fought at staples center, mandalay bay multiple times and MgM grand. Cotto had a far more impressive amateur career, and I recall that there was a lot of anticipation of his turning pro. Some might not remember that most "pundits" considered Carlos Quintana the better prospect (we know how that turned out), that plus Cotto's car accident took some of the steam off his rise. Even still Cotto was more popular at 19-0. Verdejo is still fighting on uni-mas. Based on his fighting style and marketability, if he continues to stack exciting wins, he deffinetly has a chance to pass Cotto, and based on his build, if he fills out, may possibly reach super middleweight. Heres hoping!!!

Na. By this time in Cotto's career he'd already won a bogus belt and they were making excuses not to fight Floyd.

If Felix wants to be successful inside and out he better follow cotto food steps

Sounds just like floyd to fight someone before they have hit their peak.

                    I doubt it.
But I do hope Verdejo has as long a career as Cotto does.
