The Thurman-Porter postponement illustrates EXACTLY why.......

top-level professional prizefighting will never work on advertiser-supported "free" tv.

Advertisers want guaranteed spots. They have an annual budget to allocate, and want the best exposure they can get for their dollar. They dont want refunds, or credits, or excuses, they want their spots to actually run during the program whose audience they are trying to reach.

Ive said it many times, and of course always get called a "hater" or whatever by the Haymon sack lickers. But advertiser-supported boxing content only works on an ESPN / Telemundo level. It doesnt work at the top end of the spectrum, because an event may be over in 10 minutes, or cancelled alltogether in case of injury. Thats why trying to compare boxing to football, baseball, or whatever is just ******. If Manning gets hurt, the game still goes on with the backup QB. If Thurman gets hurt, the event is cancelled. Im not sure why its so hard for some people to understand that.....

Edit: and yes I know Thurman-Porter was actually bought by Showtime and technically not "advertiser supported", but its a great example of why the advertiser-supported model doesnt work for top level fights......

if a player is injured a substitute will fulfill the starting lineup. If a golf player gets ill, dude is out of the tournament. If a boxing figure gets injured, boxing sucks.

UFC has a 600 million dollar contract. Didn't they lose a fight due to injury? You just love HBO.

Thurman-Porter was not bought by Showtime. It has always been a "presented by PBC" show.

Technically it was a combined Showtime/CBS card. Show will still go on, just not with Thurman. Wonder if Porter will remain.

Wrong. Its "Showtime Championship Boxing" on CBS, and perhaps a "presented by PBC" tag line somewhere, depending on who you ask.....

And this is a smaller scale fight. Imagine a major event getting postponed like this.

he's trying to make the dos anjos connection but it flops because anjos not only has a broken foot, it was a ppv fight and not related to the porter/thurman situation

very good point you brought up but I think it is the modern way. in the 70's used to watch ali as the champ fight on abc wide world of sports and all the others like arguello duran leonard hearns hagler etc real fighters not scared to fight and for a lot less money then they get now
