GGG's main goal has always been unification.

"It makes sense to dominate the middleweight division, and unify the title, if people will get in the ring with him," Loeffler said.
This quote is from an article written in 2013.

Golovkin, originally from Kazakhstan, is based out of the Los Angeles area. "It's a very important fight for me, because my goal is all about the middleweight division and unifying the belt", the boxer said.
This is a quote from an article written February 13th, 2016. Less than a week ago.

People seem really hung up on the whole "154 to 168" thing but GGG's primary goal for many years now has been middleweight unification. Like almost any boxer, he'd move up or down in weight under the right circumstances but it is dishonest and disingenuous to act as if unification hasn't always been the priority.

Unification is secondary to the "big fight".

              1. Willing to move up for Froch and Chavez Jr.

              2. Taking step aside deals from Cotto and Canelo.

He could have unified the entire division already if he played his hand. He would have been handed the WBC belt and would have gotten to Andy Lee, who was willing to fight him, before Saunders did.

But we will fight Ward at 164 doe. GGG and his team have made a decent living off name dropping.

because given the choice he would rather win the title from the guy holding it, rather than being elevated to full champ and having people like Dunn call him a paper champ and not give him credit.....

Not to mention the money that would come from a Canelo fight. He would be an idiot to not try and get the fight.....
