I don't see what's HBO's problem he would still fight Kovalev in 2016.
Are you sure? From what I read that isn't possible. I know Kovalev isn't allowed to fight in July.

When the November 21st fight was canceled Ward and his team imminently said they will have three fights in 2016 with the third fight being against Kovalev. They must know something we don't know.

How is that true? Where are you getting your info from? Kovalev and his team are actively pursuing a summer fight in Russia.

In November, when they signed the deal Kovalevs Promoter said the following:

We signed an agreement with Roc Nation for Andre Ward to fight Sergey Kovalev in 2016. We can't stop Ward from getting injured. But if Ward gets into the ring after June 2016 it will be against Kovalev. We would love to do this fight sooner but in the meantime Kovalev will fight the best available opponent.

Which basically means, either Roc Nation tries to negotiate with Main Events / HBO again and begs them to give Ward even more time to get another tune up in, otherwise Ward has to fight Barrera late march and another tuneup in late June, and Kovalev at the end of 2016.

          Here is the link

Andre Ward raised a few eyebrows during his recent appearance on 'the Fight Game with Jim Lampley' on HBO when he intimated to Michelle Beadle that he would not be rushed into a fight with light-heavyweight Sergey Kovalev. The belief is that Ward's new multi-fight deal with HBO would call for him to face 'the Krusher' at some point next year.

In June, but not July. Info is from Duva discussing why Stevenson fight isn't possible after June, they're signed to fight Ward and contractually not allowed to take another bout.

I don't think it's that big of an issue. They'll eventually end up fighting each other in March. I mean Ward pretty much has to take this fight. His credibility is on the line here...
              What credibility? He's an idiot.

                Ward is a nuisance.
I think Kovalev will be fine, as he can fight Braehmer/Monaghan/Barrera. It's next year that will be a problem because of how high Haymon's fighters are in the rankings. Ward stands to suffer much more if his match-up with Barrera somehow falls through.
