How many top middleweights can make 155 lbs?

I'm curious, because the so-called #1 is not willing to fight above 155 lbs, which automatically excludes some fighters as potential opponents. So my question is: How can you be ranked #1 in a weight division, if 90% of the fighters in this division are physically unable to fight you, because of your exclusive demands?

Yep agree. The last time the WBC middleweight belt featured in a fight where both fighters could weigh in at 160 was early 2013 when Martinez faced Murray, if i recall correctly.

Since then no-one involved in a WBC MW title fight has been allowed to weight in at the divisions limit. And that trend looks to continue for as long as Canelo is the champion.
It's a ridiculous situation. If they want to do catchweights fine..but they shouldn't be allowed to hold on the title while doing so.

I doubt Canelo himself can keep making that weight for too long, the guy is massive and he's getting bigger.

I think the Caneloweight will be moved to 157 or 158 next year

        It is a farce.

Imagine if Kovalev paid enough to get Charles Martin in the ring, and then beat him to become IBF Heavyweight Champion, but then insisted that all future challengers to his Heavyweight Title had to 175 lbs.

Fury and Wilder would have to cut off a leg to fight him.

very few, modern, top fighters can drop 5 lbs safely from their weigh in weight. just look at them when they weigh in, take a look at 5/8 of a gallon of water, and ask "can this world class, fit athlete drop another 5/8 of a gallon of water safely?"

answer is likely going to be a "F#ck no!"

you'd need these guys walking around the week of the fight well below their best sparring weights, and then still dropping more weight right before they weighed in.

guys woudl start dropping out of fights due to dehydration, or much worse.

Yeah, many MWs look like they'd have serious trouble making that weight.

Canelo is young enough to pull it off for now but I can't see him keeping it up for long either.

I know Lemieux has admitted its very difficult for him to make 160...Murray was huge and had to move up...Quillin obviously kills himself to make 160. Lee is like 6'2" so it must be hard for him to make middleweight now that he's older...Saunders seems like he would have difficulty dropping weight...Pretty much Golovkin is the only guy that could probably drop a few pounds and be fine, but 5 pounds is asking too much IMO.

And I think even Canelo will not be able to safely get to 155 soon.

Catchweights have always been part of boxing, but never before has a world champion refused to fight his mandatory challenger at the sanctioned weight limit of any division.

I can't believe the number of so called fans who post here calling Golovkin a coward for refusing to accept Canelo's demands.

This shit has to be stopped now. The sport will lose all credibility if Canelo is allowed to get away with it and other big name fighters start following his example.
