Comments Thread For: HBO Exec on The Rise of Golovkin, Securing Top Opponents

One of the conundrums in associating with a boxer such as Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) is finding suitable opposition that is willing to step in the ring with the unified middleweight champion. Billy Joe Saunders, who holds the WBO belt, is the latest to eschew the chance to face Golovkin.

Great...we'll continue to pay 14.99 per month to watch Triple G, Ward, and Crawford fight bums... Canelo is now fighting bums on PPV, so you won't even get to watch him..

HBO needs to go...the only decent fights are on PPV anyway...take Lampley off the telecast and HBO is no better than any other network...

Not sure why we need HBO or Showtime when all the important fights are on PPV..the rest of the fights should be on the free Networks...

I have never watch a HBO telecast because of Lampley! I'm not interested in any mismatches no matter what network it is! PBC has given more bad fights than anyone! How can Haymon have over 150 fighters & not give the fans good fights? It's all about the money! If the fans stop supporting these crappy fights, they'll have to change!

You right. Haymon needs to protect his cash cows.

HBO's garbage. at least their intro header shows Alvarez and Crawford. With GGG and Kovalev as their main intro of boxers represents what exactly? A European market appeal? I mean what is it? Seeing as Alvarez is the cash boy and has the most fans you'd think logically he'd be #1 then Pac, Crawford, and so on...

But we know what time it is with demographic marketing. Happy Floyd shamed HBO and had Merchant fired from the network. HBO and its executives had to eat it =)

I'm curious to see what HBO's plan is for GGG if Canelo decides not to fight him in Sept.

GGG has built up a very small, load and vocal core fanbase. Its about mostly made up of former P@ct@rds. They're what I like to call casual fight fan, but hardcore GGG fans. And yes, they have no interest in seeing him fight Lara.

But I have a feeling that GGG and HBO want more than Gennady to simply become a small cult hero. They have visions of him crossing over and becoming a mainstream star. But before he can crossover, he needs to win the hardcore community first. The Lemieux fight shows that the hardcore community isn't completely sold on, or backing GGG. That's where a guy like Lara comes in. If he goes out and beats Lara convincingly, which no one has. The hardcore community, even his biggest critics, will have no choice but to say this guy is more than an HBO creation. I mean, its not like he has anything better going on in Apr.
