If you wanna argue that Ward is protected in the sense that, he's only been fighting in Oakland, then OK. But he's not exactly avoided anyone.
So, fighting Paul Smith when there were about a million better options is not 'avoiding'?

Periban next would equal an avoidance of Barerra, and so on. If he fights bums, or fights nobody at all, then he's avoiding the good fighters, simple.

Get a grip, he had been inactive for 18 months.

It's not like he chose Monroe over Lara and said it was because Monroe was a bigger draw.

I think Kovalev would fight anyone without a second thought. Win or lose he just wants to hurt people.

Forget the "big star" Paul Smith.
Ward stopped Dawson at 168 -- that guy whom Stevenson KOd cold in 1:50, with the first punch he landed.
... And Ward beat E-Rod -- that guy whom Porter beat at the amateurs... Porter, doe!

Its a different situation. Kovalev is a full fledged light heavyweight. GGG is just a middleweight. If Ward would be a middleweight, GGG would fight him without a doubt. The questiuon is would Ward fight him?

              Those fights were tuneups.

On PPV, Golovkin beat Pepe Le Pew, who Rubio folded like a deckchair
