Ali disgraced himself by not fighting for his country when called up to serve. Most of America hated Ali for refusing to defend America. Ali should have been exiled and thrown out of America. But being banned for 3 1/2 years of prime time fights was pretty good punishment along with the millions spent on legal costs and the hatred that follwed Ali to this day.

No one unifies boxing like Ali, no sportsman has been as famous or as reocgnisable and no boxer as universally acclaimed. Ali the warrior, Ali the poet, Ali the man, all far superior to the modern equivalents and pale imitations.

When you can only name a handful of people to rank alongside an individual in his or her chosen profession, then you know he/she was truly great and with Ali, only Robinson, Pep, Armstrong and Leonard can walk in the same light.
