Comments Thread For: Herrera on His Options: Provodnikov, Crawford, Matthysse

As the calendar has turned to the new year, it's clear that junior welterweight contender Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7KOs) has a myriad of options awaiting him for 2016.

"They've mentioned to me a couple of names," Herrera told BoxingScene.com on New Years Day. "Ruslan (Provodnikov) is a good name and (Lucas)Matthysse at 147, (Terence) Crawford was in February. I reviewed everything and Ruslan for me makes more sense, overall. I had a talk with Robert Diaz and Golden Boy and they agreed, they were leaning towards Provodnikov."

All those fights sound great to me! But it's clear Crawford is the toughest and Ruslan is the easiest.

He wouldn't have to worry about getting robbed against Crawford. Crawford would spark him.

            All Good Fights

Mauricio Herrera has plenty of top choices. All 3 possible opponents would be damn good entertaining fights. I understand when he talks about being screwed multiple times in his career. So you can tell he is very hesitant when talking about fighting Terence Crawford.

Personally I think he will get Provo or Lucas next. Both fights would be easy to make. Another guy to throw in the mix would be Antonio Orozco. I think that would also be a damn good fight.

Ruslan lost to Herrera, whether it's debatable or not... Lucas lost to Postol. Crawford's WBO vs Herrera I doubt...

Supposedly Herrera did good on ''HBO Latino.'' I can see HBO perhaps giving a title shot to Herrera against Postol. Isn't Herrera top 5 in three councils?

Makes sense to me. I mean the way I'd strategize is put Postol and Herrera in the HBO Latino market. There has to be some strategy to beat metrics from PBC's Figueroa Jr. vs DeMarco, which wasn't even specifically targeted to a hispanic audience.

                  Bad move

I don't think Ruslan is Herrera's best option. I think he'll maybe make some money, etc but the damage he'll receive will be irreversible. Then, what if he loses? Herrera's stock will only decline even more.

I think Herrera is being used as a way for Ruslan to step up to bigger fights, since Ruslan is the kind of fighter TV networks like. Remember, too, that Ruslan is now training with Joel Diaz, so Herrera won't be fighting the same
Ruslan. Even Joel Diaz said that want to avenge that first loss to move on to bigger fights.

I personally told Herrera he should rack up some easy wins first before chasing big names; that's also an option for him too. He needs to get rid of the idea that he's getting robbed all the time. He himself needs to believe he can win without relying on judges. That's a big problem for him.

We'll see what happens in 2016.

How about Herrera vs Adrian Granados for the WBA interim title

^ See both Granados and the WBA like that idea
