It's was his first mega/super Fight. But as others said Chico, Gatti, Judah were big fights. I can't imagine the JLC fights weren't big. Maybe he wasn't as much of a name but it's had to be a big fight for boxing fans

        Thread just ended.

If so it's a credit to De La Hoya's star power. And Mayweather's fame and fortune is partly due to the Golden Boy.
Easily his first big fight. No one outside of the boxing faithful, not even casual boxing fans who would tune in for the likes of Hatton or Khan or some of the other boxing names in the UK knew who Mayweather was. They probably heard mention of his name in terms of p4p but that didn't really mean much. Oscar changed all that.

The same can be said of Pacquiao too.

If we criteria big fight by quality of opponent. Diego Corrales was 33-0 30ko. That's a big fight if there is any.

The Mayweather theorem states no matter how good they were walking into the ring they were bums walking out, no credit ever given.

absolutely. floyd and manny owe their starpower, in part, to victories over oscar de la hoya.

i'll even go as far as to say that it was the only mainstream american fight since the career of mike tyson ended.
