It would have happened regardless. I don't think Mayweather would have been content to retire with anything that tarnishes his resume. Anyway since no one else has done it I'll do the obligatory shout in any Mayweather discusssion:
Mayweather never wanted a prime Pacquiao, & everybody knows it. He never even said he wanted Pacquiao until 2015. Prior to then, he made excuses & said he didn't need Pac. Floyd waited nearly 2.5 years after Marquez KO'd Pac, to make sure Manny was good & shot before he finally fought him.

You're conveniently leaving out the part where Manny ran away from random drug testing, which he later agreed to.
As is often the case for fighters early in their careers when they're still learning the ropes, opponents are picked and chosen carefully and tactically at precise times either when they're fading or if they were in a compromised physical condition due to some issue with the weight or following a long period of inactivity.
Mayweather extended this strategy well beyond his infancy as a pro and carried it throughout the vast majority of his career with few exceptions. It was clever strategy, let's be real and it's this highly tactical matchmaking which may have been one of the primary reasons Floyd had been propelled to the top of the boxing world.
So the question needs to be raised: If Marquez hadn't KOd Pacquiao in such devastating fashion, would Mayweather vs Pacquiao have even taken place as yet, or would Mayweather still be waiting until Pacquiao finally appeared to be noticeably faded and vulnerable?
Floyd saw the KO, and started to take negotiations seriously.
Before that he was putting roadblock after roadblock, he wouldn't fight him unless Pacquia signed with Mayweather promotions? lmfao
Hee fought Pacquiao after he got brutally knocked out. It wasn't a simple ko either, he was out before he hit the floor and spent 5 minutes on the ground motionless. And Pacquiao also hit the floor hard on the KD before that.
In FLoyds mind, his nemesis got ko'ed brutally, one of the most devastating ko's in boxing history, why not push for the fight now that he is at his worst? make load of money with it.
Pacquioa beeing at the worst moment a fighter can be, takes away from the win, thats just the truth no matter what other people say, the fight happened after Pacquiao did get KO'ed and was laying on the canvas for 5 minutes motionless. these are facts.

How can you bring yourself to post this when you know Manny walked away from the fight in 2009 and 2012? He also got the stitches prior to Floyd going to jail. This is like blaming GGG for not fighting Sergio or Cotto.
It's ok to hate Floyd, but this is utterly disgraceful.
Your point is correct but your supporting evidence is wrong.
Manny turned the fight down in 09 and then again right before Floyd went to jail. JMM 4 fight was the classic "cherrypick gone wrong". Manny made that fight instead of Floyd for $40 mil, no ppv, which turned out to be the smart business move in hindsight. Manny finally accepted to fight Floyd because the PPV's after the JMM KO undersold.
It was obvious that TR had exhausted the Manny v "easy opponent" or Manny v "guy Floyd beat" models so there was no option other than fighting Floyd. Had fans supported Rios, Bradley 2, or Algieri to Bob's satisfaction, Manny and he would've passed on the fight again.
As 2015 comes to an end, I think the Floyd/Manny debates should as well.
Manny v "easy opponent"? This Is rather amusing considering Pacquiao has just as good If not a better resume than Floyd does and has beat all of there common opponents except Marquez In more spectacular fashion.
