That's not all true but even if it was surely better defence is decided by who got hit less? so in this case it's clearly Jones prime for prime. Ali had good defence but not exceptional. The way he gracefully moved around the ring and sometimes dodged jabs can fool people into thinking he had amazing defence but he got hit quite a bit in between.

Two great fighters who didn't get hit much at all when they were in their prime. Ali's prime was before he was forced out of boxing for over 3 of his prime years. I gave Jones a slight edge. I think he fought a little better competition in his prime years and was never knocked down or hurt. Ali was knocked down and hurt by Cooper.

I agree. A good defense means a boxer avoids punishment. If he avoids punishment by using fundamentals or by athletic movement doesn't matter as long as it gets the desired results.

Good post! Who do you think had the better defense Whitaker or Mayweather? A lot of people disagree on this. I personally think Floyd had the better defense as he was never cleanly knocked down, never defeated, had the better compubox numbers, and won more title fights than Whitaker. I think Sweetpea had the more fan friendly style however.

I think Floyds defense was more effective as he made you pay and Whitakers at times was more entertaining with less effectiveness on the make you pay side...BUT both were great and 2 of the best defensive fighters of all time
