I found out why Lemieux accepted the GGG fight

1) Lemieux had a minimum with GBP. So even with the super low purse bid for N'Dam, he still made money on FS2 that got like a 50k AVG viewership. If you remember after Lemieux beat N'Dam, Oscar was against Lemieux fighting GGG.

Then a month later it was announced that Lemieux would fight GGG. So what happened? Remember Lemieux's manager turning down an undercard slot on the Kovalev v. Pascal fight and saying he was looking for Lemieux to headline his own card? Yea, we all laughed.
Canadian star David Lemieux (34-3, 31KOs) will likely return to the ring in the early part of 2016, according to his longtime manager Camille Estephan of Eye of The Tiger Management. "He's taking some time off. Hopefully he will fight sometime in March or April," Estephan told BoxingScene.com. "[Lemieux] can still beat anybody at middleweight, I'm confident. We want the top guys, nothing has changed. We still want that. We're confident David has that [ability to beat the top guys]."
Well it turns out that Lemieux's manager got HBO to give Lemieux a date if he agreed to fight GGG.

Lemieux went from fighting on Fox Sports 2 to PPV to headlining his own HBO card. Damn good job by his manager Camille Estephan
2) HBO weren't playing with wanting him to fight on HBO and Oscar still had a minimum with him.... where's he gonna put him? Make out with as much as you can with another HBO card for 2016.Comment

Don't kid yourself; even if HBO holds to that alleged promise, it'll likely be for a Boxing after Dark broadcast, with no real extra effort put into the broadcast. If you remember after Lemieux beat N'Dam, Oscar was against Lemieux fighting GGG.

No different than when HBO owed Edwin Rodriguez a return date, threw him onto the Golovkin-Rubio card as the fourth/fifth fight (doubt that the fight even made it on the HBO broadcast), and called the matter settled.Comment

If 97k was a lie, it's blatantly obvious that Loeffler's 150k was also a lie, lol.
The fact that K2 thought it smart to put out a press release touting merchandise sales (a figure that probably didn't even reach $200k, if we're being honest) let you know that the gate wasn't all that stellar either (having Cotto-Margarito 2 being openly known to have done over $3m at the gate ended any chance of K2 hyping whatever the real Golovkin gate number was).
The truth is likely somewhere between those two numbers; based on all of the secondary indicators (poor replay rating, only Loeffler putting out his neck to stake a PPV number, a perceived apathy regarding the event by HBO, no mention of the gate, etc), I'm guessing that the truth is closer to 97k than it is to 150k.Comment

HBO are so messy about this ****. Martinez lost his damn WBC title because they made him fight Dzinzuik, which they did because they had previously promised Shaw a fight for him as part of a deal for some other fight Shaw made (was it Bradley Alexander), and the time was almost up.Comment

True but Lemieux is marketable if you know what I mean.Don't kid yourself; even if HBO holds to that alleged promise, it'll likely be for a Boxing after Dark broadcast, with no real extra effort put into the broadcast.

Lemieux is a Quebecois who isn't any more conversational in American English than Golovkin is. On top of that, after being gifted his title (off of TV) the first time the HBO audience really pays attention to Lemieux, they see him get skunked and stopped in a fight. You add that he walked into this current situation after rebuilding from getting stopped and losing back-to-back fights the first time he was on the cusp of being a star, and I'm not sure what you're seeing as "marketable".
Montreal will love him until it starts to look like he's passed it as a fighter; his drawing ability at home should be able to rebound behind a pair of wins.
US TV? not so sureComment

It was an excellent gate number and I don't remember much about the merchandise press release but thousands of people were buying GGG hats and shirts there. The lines were long. That is impressive, especially in boxing. I don't see why it shouldn't be touted. If 97k was a lie, it's blatantly obvious that Loeffler's 150k was also a lie, lol.
