i can't wait, Gamboa is amazingly skilled but something is lacking...my best guess is a bit lack of discipline and some concentration, that stuff he was doing of letting his hands down when he exchanges is not cool at all, he's a lot better than to be making those simple mistakes

He turns 34 next week, has fought 6 times in the last half decade and is fighting in the wrong division. For a guy with Gamboa's style, 34 is getting up there in age and

I still expect him to be very good as his talent level is ridiculous, but the fighter that blitzed Solis and Salido? Nah.

I don't care for excuses. I still regard the current Gamboa as the best fighter from 126-135 in terms of talent so I still fully expect him to win.

Ok. I'll buy that. Not sure I'd write off his prime just yet,though. He's been in a few tough fights but he hasn't taken beatings like a Rios or a Provodnikov or even Cotto.

I think it depends more on if his head is right. Maybe a little older, wiser (hopefully) Gamboa will be just that little bit smarter/more disciplined enough to overshadow whatever small amount of athleticism his age has cost him.

Everytime I get excited about Gamboa he disappoints me.

I remember when he KO'd Solis and decisioned PDL I couldn't wait to see him back in the ring. Then he has a fall out with Arum, drops out of a fight against Rios, has a pointless fight against Perez and comes back a year later, rusty, not in great shape and gets KO'd by Crawford.

I want to believe he'll stay busy and provide us with great fights, but I've been fooled before by this guy.

Glad to see Gamboa back. He was always fun to watch. Fast hands and good combos, if he got dropped, he always came back.
Sucks he wasted years of his career, but maybe it can somehow work to his advantage. He had to learn something about life and money sitting on the sidelines. He is still in great shape, not like Rios who cried about a long layoff, for his weight gain (instead of saying he is lazy).

Even though he lost to Crawford, he showed us the best of him. If him and Crawford were the same size, Gamboa probably wins. Manny doesn't even want none of Crawford.

Yeah Gamboa is far from over. He's far too talented. Last fight was just a setback.

Yup like ironmike2012 said even at that higher weight he showed the glimpses of thecoulda/shoulda been. That was a good fight. Go back to a good weight and he'll be a wildcard, dark horse type of opponent. Those weights have some sicks fights available throw Gamboa in the mix and damn!!

Honestly, I'm extremely disappointed we won't get an eventual Crawford rematch with him moving up and Gamboa moving down. He took waaay too much time off for such a high profile fight against a great fighter in the wrong weight class. A title at super featherweight a tune up at lightweight would have made a much more interesting fight.

He's this generation's Ibeabuchi. Absolutely tremendous talent that we may never see to its full potential.

Interesting he was allowed to go to Cuba and train, given his status as defector. Maybe has to do somewhat with the movements toward normalization of relations with the US, allowing people of Cuban heritage to visit Cuba.

I am curious as to how he got into Cuba but how he got out as well. Does this mean that other defectors can go back to Cuba to train? Will Cuban boxers be allowed to fight professionally?

Curious about this myself. Gamboa goes back to Cuba is a magazine or blog article at very least. Hope someone has or will be releasing something like that. Would be a good read imo.

I've heard people that have tried to leave Cuba get treated badly in the past. Wonder if that sorta **** is still going on to some degree or not.

This past week, a delegation of Cuban baseball players landed on the island to play an MLB exhibition. Some of the Cuban defectors included Jose Abreu, Yasiel Puig and Alexei Ramirez. They were accompanied by Joe Torre, Major League Baseball's chief baseball officer. It's surreal to see photos of those defectors, dubbed "gusanos" (worms) in the past by the Cuban regime, shaking hands with the very same people they ran away from. I'm still shaking my head over it. Lol Anyway, it's clearly a part of the effort to normalize relations spearheaded by the ***** administration. The effects have apparently trickled down to guys like Gamboa.
