A world Title by definition (at least in combat sports, not team sports part of a league) is a championship that you can take anywhere with you and defend it.

Jack Johnson famously took his Heavyweight Title overseas and defended it because of his little dust up in the U.S. Hell, this is why we have a thing called "lineal" champion, where we recognize a guy as champion even if he gets unjustifiably stripped of his trinket. In the UFC, you are nothing but their league champion. They own you. You can't leave their league and still be the champ.

It doesn't matter if they all have been lured into the UFC with the prospects of making career high paydays, it's the principle of it. Its a locked in promotion, it's not a World league or even a National league like the NBA, NFL, NHL. They are national leagues with franchises representing certain states. The UFC isn't even claiming to be the National league for MMA. They're just some entertainment racket called Ultimate fighting Championship.

Some other competitor could rise up tomorrow called Extreme Cage fighting (maybe they even exist, i didn't check) and they have their own ECF World Title with some over the top shiny pretend belt.

Exactly. He is their organizations champion also, not a WORLD champion as he claims. The whole premise behind a UFC World Championship is bogus. It's a make-world belt.

When McGregor leaves the UFC and takes his starpower on the road as a freelance fighter and once the MMA has actual World Champions, then we can talk. There are no MMA world titles. The WBC/WBO/IBF/WBA are organizations/sanctioning bodies but they have champions all over the globe, signed to all kinds of promoters and if a fighter becomes big enough in the lower divisions, he doesn't even need them anymore (i.e. Floyd).

Why don't I get some investors and apply for a MMA promoters license in my state of choice, create my own MMA league calling it whatever the *** i want, create my own designer belts calling them world Titles,and if the thing takes off I will have my own version of the UFC, and a bunch of MMA "World Champions" signed under my cage fighting like a buncha apes at a zoo.

Also keep in mind that the ONLY thing that gives UFC legitimacy as a World organization with World Titles is their popularity. Ratings and sales.

Anybody can take their spot with their own "World Trinkets". They don't have this in boxing. The WBC is a World Title no matter how popular the champion is, or his promoter.
