Comments Thread For: DiBella Hoping for Jacobs-Lee Around St. Patrick’s Day

Daniel Jacobs knocked out Peter Quillin on Dec. 5. Andy Lee fights Billy Joe Saunders on Dec. 19. And Lou DiBella thinks a collision between Jacobs and Lee in 2016 would do well at the box office, especially if it’s timed around St. Patrick’s Day.

“I think it sells a lot of tickets. Andy can ****. It’d be an interesting fight. He factors in there with any of the top middleweights; he is a top middleweight,” said DiBella, who promotes Lee and was involved in putting on Al Haymon’s card featuring Lee vs. Quillin. DiBella is one of multiple promoters to be working with Haymon in such a capacity.

Fight could still happen win or lose. Jacobs can't fight for the WBO belt anyway as long as he holds the regular title

You can't hold a WBA regular title & WBO title? I did not know that. I love the alphabet groups got so many rules yet break one of them weekly or at least monthly. Corrupt mfers. GGG been mandatory since before ***** was president seems like & the WBC is hyping a co-feature with Canelo & GGG lol.

If they're playing up the St. Paddy'd day angle they should hold it in Boston. Hold a local show the night before. Bring out some of the old local boxing legends. Have Marvin Hagler help promote the show.

I guess yes and now. You can when there's no super champion, when there's a super champion, don't think any of the other organizations recognize the regular over the super.

Recent examples are when Tomoki had to vacate to fight McDonnell and Frampton/Quigg...Rigo being the super champion and being "upgraded" to champion in recess.

Even when Pirog was going to fight GGG with the regular, he vacated the WBO

Here's what they recently said about McDonnell/Kameda.

The below letter was issued by the World Boxing Organization to the management of WBO bantamweight champion Tomoki Kameda - rejecting his request to have a unification with Jamie McDonell, because he is only the WBA "regular" champion - which they (any many experts) consider a secondary world title because the recognized WBA champion of the division is Juan Carlos Payano, who unseated longtime champion Chemito Moreno. The WBA's insistence to have numerous world titles within a single weight division has caused confusion among fans for the last few years. Kameda vs. McDonnell is scheduled to take place on May 9th as part of a Premier Boxing Champions card in Texas.

Based on the above dispositions, the WBO World Championship Committee will not authorize your proposed bout with Jamie McDonnell as a Unification Contests, as it our position not to recognize the “secondary titlists” of organisms that opt to have more than one champion per division— as is the case with the WBA, which has Juan Carlos Payano as its so-called “Super Champion” in the Bantamweight division and Yonfrez Parejo as its “Interim” titleholder. Simply put, the WBO only recognizes the “highest” titleholder of other sanctioning organisms as legitimate champion for unification purposes (in this case Payano). In addition to this, the WBO World Championship Committee may only sanction contenders to the WBO World Championship title that are rated within the top 15 of the WBO. In this case, McDonnell does not meet the criteria of the WBO Ratings Committee and is not rated.

Finally, please note that should you decide to participate of the aforementioned bout in spite of this warning and without our authorization, this Committee may order you to show cause as to why the WBO Bantamweight Championship of the World should not be declared vacant or, in the alternative, it may declare the title vacant without further hearing you.

Very truly yours, WBO World Championship Committee

Jacobs may have to vacate and request ranking should Lee win. The WBA already mandated Jacobs vs Eubank/O'Sullivan. What a mess.

Under the same reasoning, they may not allow Golovkin to unify with Lee/Saunders either as he holds the WBC interim title. Of course he could have Alvarez stripped by tomorrow.

this is all going down to, is HBO willing to work with haymon?

hopefully we get to see these fights, because unifications are going to be difficult without the networks working together.

The WBO even stripped Sergio Martinez because when he defeated Kelly Pavlik he was the WBC 154lbs champion. He dragged his feet about dropping the title and the WBO cut him loose.

NY makes more sense. St. Patricks Day is pretty live there as well (not as much as Beantown though) and Jacobs brings in the BK crowd.

Wait so they don't see the regular champ as a champ, but they won't rate that guy either? If he's not the champ shouldn't he be rateable? Oh nm alphabet groups don't make sense my bad.

Well guess this will have to be a non-title fight between probably the 3rd & 4th best guys in the division than (assuming BJS don't win obviously). Well the more stuff like this that happens, assuming it does come to pass, I think the more it'll sink in to promoters, managers & fighters how little they need alphabet groups. Getting all the promoters, managers & fighters on the same level is probably harder than herding cats doe I imagine.
