Brooklyn, New York - Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KO’s) has a date for January 16th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Though he has a date and venue, he does not have an opponent. Wilder says if he had it his way, his January opponent would have been his mandatory, Olympic gold medal winner Alexander Povetkin.

This isn't believable. Another posted pointed out that wilder and his camp would do exactly this- wait until Povetkin fought someone else and then claim he wanted him for January.

There was plaenty of time to make the Povetkin fight but wilder and his team do not want to risk losing before he gets the bigger payday with Fury or wlad.

      Jeez, this guy..

All he is doing to trying to save face. So he doesn't get Povetkin, yet he has no opponent lined up and you can bet it wont be no better than the bums hes fought so far..

Stiverne should have fought Povetkin instead of Wilder for the WBC belt as Stiverne was the "silver" champ in 2013, then won the vacant WBC world title in 2014 as Povetkin beat Charr and Takam to get the WBC International and then the WBC Silver Championship in the same year. So instead of fighting Wilder, Stiverne should have fought the #1 contender who was Povetkin.

All Wilder is doing is the same thing that Stiverne got away with...but we all know that Wilder doesn't want the fight either.

If Wilder wanted Povetkin why did he apply for a voluntary defence with the WBC?

All part of his team's plan. Make the public believe Povetkin was an option. Either way, Povetkin was on the greatest PPV ever aired on a Wednesday.

Didn't Povetkin want to fight Wilder in September? Then Wilder insisted on a tune up, so Povetkin also wanted to fight since he had been waiting since May. Am I misremembering this? Does Wilder even know what's going on with his own team?

This isn't true. Even after Wilder's last fight, several reporters mentioned that his team was pushing for another tuneup before Povetkin, and that the fight likely wouldn't take place until the Summer of 2016.
