And the Heavyweight Crown is Broken Up Again

Regardless of any opinions as Wladimir Klitschko as a fighter, I thought it was nice to have almost one undisputed champion for so many years. He's never had the WBC but he's had all of the others for a long while and I thought that was a good thing. The more unified titles in boxing, the better.

Yet, now only a week after losing to Fury, the titles are already splitting up once again. I know the IBF has their rules, but I would think the immediate rematch clause overrides that. I guess either way, this shows how hard it is on fighters to be a unified champion, catering to the rules of four different organizations. It's really too much to ask of anybody. I'd love to see them go down. 1980s wrestling had fewer titles than boxing does these days.

I agree with you in theory but I just think that in this day and age, it is virtually impossible for one fighter to remain unified champion for any length of time. What Klistchko did in kind of jumping from mandatory to mandatory for years, in retrospect, was sensational, but he may be the last one capable of doing that imo.

Being unified champion is overrated. It's as much about politics as it is about skill. Now that Fury's lost the IBF is his position diminished in any way? No. Everyone still recognises him as the best in the division. So why bother even holding the IBF? Let Glazkov or whoever take it and wallow in obscurity.

The other belts allows people to walk around claiming greatness or that the "real champ" didn't want to fight them. Only for them to be fooling people who are unaware of the politics.

The IBF isn't to fault here; if they were really trying to mess things up, they would've done so before the Klitscko-Fury fight.

The fault lies with Kathy Duva, and basically solely her; given just the free negotiating period, the process towards a possible purse bid, and the scheduling of the actual fight, Fury-Glazkov could've been pushed to April 2016 if all parties were willing to work in good faith (opening things up for Fury to go through with the rematch, and Glazkov to still get his shot).

The WBO rarely goes through the hassle of making mandatory challengers (unless doing so would help things out for Bob Arum or Frank Warren, which is odd) and WBC/WBA/IBF have been working together to better streamline their processes, bring all three organizations better in line with each other.

Doing so is easier than you'd think, as long as everyone is willing to do business (Duva pushing to speed up the IBF mandatory defense process was a punk move)

A few years ago I said Vitali Klitschko was holding up the division & preventing us from seeing an undisputed champion. Now the sanctioning bodies will start to dismantle the division again. Fury wants the big money fights & nothing more. He will vacate a couple of titles to get those fights. Haye, Klitschko, Povetkin & Wilder are the guys he will want to fight. Maybe Joshua if he keeps winning too. Anyone else is a risk & a waste of time for him...
