We don't know yet because neither have been tested properly. But from what I have seen, Golovkin is the smarter fighter. Not to say that Kovalev isn't but that's just my opinion. GGG is arguable the best in the world at cutting the ring off, has a world class jab, undeniable power, great chin and defense, great technique and a very good boxing brain. He is the more solid boxer-puncher.
Golovkin is a better boxer and a better fighter. People think Kovalev is a better 'boxer' because he's more mobile but I don't see it. He's good but Golovkin is special.
Boone is SEVERELY underrated. He's given trouble to many future great fighters. It's funny you bring him up though, because he'd be an excellent source of this information as he was GGG's sparring partner this year and has fought Kov in the past.
I'm not sure who's better. To me, Kovalev displayed excellent boxing IQ when he took care of Hopkins. Not only did he prove himself younger and stronger (which were obvious), but he was rarely outsmarted by BHop. Not many fighters are able to say that.
Golovkin's aura of invincibility is still very strong. He's never been down, never been seriously hurt and very rarely lost a round.
